The latest D8 requirement: Social security :/

Hi lovely people,
I'm about to have my SEF appointment in December to get my residency card for my D8 visa and have just had a friend turned away (ahead of me in the process) because she didn't have a social security number. Are you hearing this too?
If you have obtained one, are you now obliged to contribute a large percentage of your income towards the scheme? It seems like A LOT... Appreciate any help or guidance
