I plan to go to Bulgaria in March 2024. So according to what I read, I will be considered a tax resident in Bulgaria if I stay more than 183 days in 2024. So does that mean that when I file my taxes in 2025, do I have to file for between 1st January 2024 and 31st December 2024?

@Harmanjeet Singh

If your a British citizen and your tax affairs are in UK then BG and UK have a reciprocal tax agreement .. if your not then you need to find out your tax status because you could be liable for tax in your country an tax on what you bring into BG

I am from Singapore and we do have double tax agreement with Bulgaria. My income will be outside of Singapore and so I will only be taxed in Bulgaria. Singapore has a territorial tax system for most situations.

So if I go to Bulgaria in March 2024, 183 days later would be September 2024. That is when I will be considered a tax resident. Does that mean I have to pay tax on my earnings for the whole of 2024?

Hi

If your contracted to a company they will take care of your tax burden on a pay as you earn basis.

If your self employed I suggest you contact a company in BG who specialise in BG tax .  Accountants or Lawyers so they can register you and show you the way

I think, from my experience moving between countries with tax agreements, that you pay tax only from the date you moved. But that was many years ago and not Bulgaria, so hopefully someone with more recent Bulgarian experience can answer. Using an accountant, at least for the first year until you get familiar with the Bulgarian system, might be a lot less stressful!

You have to check with the Bulgarian embassy in Singapore. USA has tax agreement with Bulgaria as well.  If you are an American you can keep paying your US taxes only.
