14 months now since I came from the UK to live here and I have adapted well to the local foods BUT the one thing I cannot find is any delicious bread. Everything here seems tasteless and pappy. Anybody got any recommendations?

That is true but then you spend so much of your time kneading. A bread maker helps.

Good suggestion. I googled and French Bakery have a branch near here and they even list the baton bread sticks as available. I will try.

I buy Gardena whole wheat bread. Quality Bakery here also has a good whole wheat bread. Luckily there is one bakery in town that makes anexcellent french baguette.

From time to time I find Kings Hawaiian Sweet Rolls at S&R P468 or $8.46 USD.

Walmart USA price $3.59

Which town are you referring to? I’d love some ”real” french baguette!

When SM opened a new branch in downtown Cagayan De Oro I'd heard it was going to include a Burger King (at that time there were no Burger King places in Cagayan De Oro) and I assumed downtown SM in CDO was going to be like the typical SM stores in Cebu, Manila and many other large cities, so I was extremely disappointed when I first visited there only to find there was no French Bakery and there are still no French Bakery outlets in CDO and by now we have at least 3 Burger King restaurants.

What I wouldn't do for real French croissants and cinnamon rolls. No glazed sugar, baked, flaky, hot, waiting for a lathering of butter.

When I was 17 I went to work in a little cafe for a French guy I knew to learn how to cook. He was famously known for his croissant and cinnamon rolls. They were the best. In my entire life, I have only found ONE more place that made them as well as him. And it too, was French owned. In Las Vegas.

The only decent bread we have found here is the French loaf cooked at home by me or ben and fantastic with my pumpkin or zucchini soup and the next day or 2 toasted, buttered and vegemite or jam, also used the left overs for croutons. As another member mentioned the regular bread sold here is a dessert.

Off topic but we went to a high end Japanese restaurant yesterday and I ordered the seafood Ramen and the only real seafood was 1 cooked to death prawn and the rest was processed, factory processed crap, Ben the same with his pork Ramen, even the noodles were garbage,,,,, no tip and 3/4 of the food sitting on the table.

Difficult to find decent food here unless it's a mum and dad cafeteria and honest and local, no bread though.

Cheers, Steve.

I never managed to find any decent bread on my visits either, much too sweet for me but I did find if I toasted it, fried it or made Eggy bread with it, it was much more palatable.

Side note - I went to the cinema once in Davao with my ex girlfriend and was surprised at the different flavoured popcorn on sale including bbq, cheese and sour cream and often wondered if they could do this, why can I not find a wider selection of decent bread. I stuck to normal popcorn as I do not like cheese or sour cream and found it such a weird combination. It would also have made me puke.

Update.

Visited French Bakery  in Ayala Tagaytay. Super bread freshly baked and hot when you get it. At last my craving satisfied !

If you can go to Metro Manila, you should be able to get some good croissants and baguettes. One bakery is Lartizan, and it has several branches in Metro Manila.
