Experiences of people who have settled in Cyprus with a Non-Dom status

Post new topic

Hello everyone,

I am a 33-year-old German digital nomad and, after several years of traveling, am looking for a place to settle down. I am fluent in both German and English and have extensively researched and visited various places over the years. Recently, I was in Cyprus and am thrilled by the island and its possibilities.

Currently, I work as a freelance software developer and plan to start my own company in Cyprus. I am particularly interested in the experiences of people who have settled in Cyprus with a Non-Dom status. I would like to obtain first-hand information on this topic.

I am looking forward to meeting new people and connecting with like-minded individuals. From January 25th to February 25th, I will be in Paphos for a month. During this time, I plan to thoroughly explore the country, conduct the necessary research, and meet with local lawyers, tax consultants, and real estate agents. Further stays over the next six months are planned to get to know Cyprus even better.

I would be very grateful to get in touch with people who have experience living and working in Cyprus. Any advice, recommendation, or even an informal chat would be incredibly valuable to me.

Thank you in advance, and I hope for a lively exchange!

Best regards,

Victor

Welcome!

I am a digital nomad and have been in Cyprus since Dec 2022. You sound like you are making all the right plans for your move and Cyprus is a great place to live and work. From a taxation perspective it is very good!

In your line of work you will want a good internet connection. There is fiber in some parts and the cost is not a lot circa 19euro for 100mb per month. However, the links off island are not so good and my UK link drops to about 9mb. Not sure if 1gb connection would help but worth investigating. Installation is quick at about 10 days depending on where you are. I was lucky to have fiber outside my house.

There is plenty of advise on this forum and people at varying stages so a great place to get info. My 1st piece of advise is be prepared for a VERY slow track thru authorities. As you are European things should be better for you as visa's will not be your issue. Feel free to ask questions. Most things in Cyprus are slowly slowly lol Most property is furnished. That goes for rental or purchase. Check this if you are planning to bring personal possessions.

Welcome to Cyprus!

Have you reached out to RicoGo yet? He's a German guy living here in Paphos and you can find him on YouTube, tiktok, insta.

Also, I'm not sure if it's still going, but there certainly used to be a Saturday morning networking and coffee meetup at the meraki Market cafe.

Hi Jack

the non-dom status exempts you for the first 17 years from taxation on interest and dividends wherever received, you should apply to tax dept after your registration. The requisite is not having a parent of cypriot nationality and having lived in CY less than 17 years in the last 20 years.

Cyprus taxes you on worldwide income, even if generous exemptions are present. This is good since it allows you to qualify as resident also under double tax treaties which very often exclude the traditional non-dom regimes in UK and Malta since they do not implement the worldwide taxation principle (while CY does).

On the company you will pay 12.5% on the profit, while 0% on dividends. You will also pay 2.65% GHS. For more details you should speak with local tax professionals.

last but not least check with your country of origin (germany) the conditions to not be considered anymore a resident under local law and under the DTA between CY and Germany.

for the sake of completeness: this is not tax advice, just personal learnings, speak with authorized local professionals for a qualified opinion.
