Hi

Those anybody has some real info about the Progesso Properties? It looks like a gated property with an annual $250 HOA including some amenities I have no interest in. Any experiences with dealing with the property owner/manager? Thanks

@travelbeat

I went in last Nov and saw 3 properties there , I did not like it , its kinda isolated and houses far from each other , also hardly any lives there , most of them vacant , the developer abandoned the project so no one knows who looks after the maintenance, u have only a remote to open the gate but there are No gaurds or any one maning it …. in my views thats not a gated community …. I recommend consejo shores

@travelbeat I'm guessing you were looking at Progresso Heights. If so, no there isn't much going on and hasn't been in quite a while. There's also Progresso Estates/Progresso Laguna Estates in the area.

We've had a place on Progresso Lagoon for the last two decades. If you know where to shop in the Mennonite community across the lagoon (Little Belize) it can save you some trips to Orange Walk or Corozal, but Progresso is still a rural village with few amenities. The paving of the Corozal- Sarteneja Road and work on the bridges to replace the ferries are bringing more growth and interest to the general area though.

There are plenty of expat communities around Corozal Town, but it's worth looking on the Cerros side as well. Cerros Sands and Orchid Bay are well established, but there's a new development going in outside of Copper Bank. Saw the sign a couple of weeks ago - it's 214 acres and they've already begun work on cutting in the roads. The sign says Escape to Belize. Toucan Bay is doing it as part of The Kelly Group. We own some land across the road from it, so we're keeping an eye on the progress.

@belizelandoffices Thanks for your updates. I will be in Belize this April/May to have a close look where I might put up my "tent". Have a few properties in mind. I don't need to hang around Expats (nothing personal) just try to blend in the community as it seems that Belizeans are good folks.

I agree , better and more enjoyable

@travelbeat and that's why we live in Progresso... and not Corozal. In our experience there are a couple of types of expats - the ones that want the resort lifestyle and tend to look for the higher end gated communities and those of us that live in a village outside of a subdivision and assimilate into the local ways.

Enjoy your visit. There are plenty of great options around. While Belizeans are great (we've been in the wedding parties of a few), sometimes it's also nice to chat with other down-to-earth expats that didn't move to recreate their home country. You'll find some long-term (10 and 20+ year) Canadian and American expats sprinkled around. Monday soup night at Orchid Bay tends to gather a few and if Cerros Beach Resort is open, Bill and Jenny are wonderful people that always serve a delicious meal. They make a tasty hibiscus wine if you partake.
