Best KL International School ADHD Child

Post new topic

AuKL

Hi there,

My family and I are relocating from Australia to KL at the end of this year, and we are in search for a suitable school for our two boys.

Our eldest son (8) has ADHD, and requires classroom support with Math and English. In essence we need a school which is understanding of ADHD children and accommodating to their needs.

We are looking at a few schools (below) and wanted to ask if anyone has any recommendations or insights into ADHD and Asian schooling?

  • British International
  • Mont Kiara Internarional
  • Australian International
  • Epsom International

any support you may be able to provide would be really helpful.

The bad news is most Brirish style International Schools don't support special needs, indeed moving abroad to one can be disastrous for a child. The focus is generally on results,  and most British style ones are more like grammar schools. American, Australian and Canadian schools are often better.

Nexus, in Putrajaya unfortunately,  is prob the best school for children with special needs.

Some will charge extra for a TA, GIS did before (things change, ask them).

For a similar curriculum reason alone, I would say Australia ISM is the only choice you have, as the others are hardcore grammar type schools and the shock of  achange  of curriculum and larger schools would be a lot of stress.

Ask AISM what support they offer. I suggest it should be your first choice.

British IS and Epsom are British style schools. Mont Kiara has had a major problem recently, word is bad management, so I would be cautious, but is more American style.

Please note there are special support companies, after school tuition type places, for children with special needs. They can be helpful.

Hi

My kids go to Mont Kiara International School, my oldest (12) has ADHD, my youngest doesn't and is super academic. We are British but chose the IB curriculum for our kids as we feel it's a more modern approach to learning that better supports both our kids, they are really supportive to my 12 yr old to ensure we get the best we can out of him.  While also encouraging and challenging my youngest academically.  I would also say a few of the other schools we looked at felt huge and quite overwhelming and chaotic when kids were moving between lessons.  MKIS is a bit smaller but still has all the great facilities the bigger schools offer but in a more cosy, friendly environment.  Every family wants different things from a school, so go take a look at a few, get a feel for their attitude towards neurodivergence and spec ed and go from there.  MKIS has worked out great for our family.
