Changing Rental Agreement after Getting D7 Travel Visa

Post new topic

I have a one-year lease (until May 2025) for a room in a house that I used for applying for my D7. The lease was drawn up by an attorney and i have proof the landlord paid the stamp duty. The landlord is a personal friend. I just signed a 6-month lease on another property. I am also looking for a place to buy. I intend to use the original lease (for the room) for the AIMA appointment. Since I know the landlord, there will be no problem having the residency card sent there. Is there anything wrong with my thinking? I don't think it's necessary or makes sense to further complicate this process with a second lease and new address.

Your plan has possible problems.

  1. It is not actually true. So, you run the risk of being exposed and could lose your visa over something so technically trivial as an address change with AIMA. (Yes, I know how hard it is to actually get that address change done - but it still doesn't change the legalities!)
  2. You must personally sign for the card at the address claimed. CTT will only hand it over to the recipient of the card. They are not stupid - otherwise everyone would be using dummy addresses. If you are not there, waiting, they will return the card to AIMA. And then you will be back at square one.
  3. You are friends with your landlord now. If it ever falls apart, he could make a complaint and you will be back at point 1. again.

For me, registering the correct address and staying strictly within the confines of the regulations is a no-brainer, but each to his own.

Is there a link where I can read about the address change requirement?  I'm in a somewhat similar situation:

I leased an apartment for one year, which ends in Jan 2025.  In my D7 Visa Application letter, I clearly stated that I would be looking for an apartment closer to the center of the town where I plan to stay long term, but that I had been unable to find one prior to my VFS appointment.

My D7 was approved with that full disclosure made up front.  I have since found another apartment where I plan to reside long term.  Is the requirement that I advise AIMA at my appointment with them (or before)?  Thanks!

You should contact the AIMA/SEF to have your new address updated in the system:

@daphnelavern Thanks! Mine is DC

@JohnnyPT Thanks for the links, Johnny.  I confirmed that my AIMA appt is in late Nov 2024.  I guess I missed it in the links discussion, but do I tell AIMA before my Nov appt or can I tell them at my Nov appt that I found another place?  I leased the first apartment in Feb 2024 because my VFS appointment was on Feb 26, 2024 and, in SF, I had to provide a full one year lease as part of my application.

I am not trying to play any games as this is too important (entire life change) for me, but I wonder if I come to my Nov appt with the new lease info (including evidence of tax/financial bureau payments, etc.), refer to my application letter where I stated that I'd be seeking another place in town, they would, hopefully, reasonably, update my address info at that time for the residence permit.

My biggest concern is that if I try to contact them now to update, it may somehow affect my already approved visa for Sep 1...1f625.svg1f625.svg; of course, I know the final decision is mine, but I'd appreciate any insightful thoughts on this/what I might be missing.  Thank you!

@daphnelavern Someone recently commented in another forum that they got a lease for a different property after they arrived in Portugal. They didn't contact AIMA before their meeting with the change of address. They brought the new lease to the AIMA meeting. It wasn't a problem.

Several people in the Porto group have mentioned that at their AIMA meetings they were given the option of picking up the residency card at the AIMA office rather than having it mailed to their residence. There was an additional charge for this, something like 25 euros.

Thank you for sharing that comment, @wordsmith555! It's encouraging and I feel more hopeful that the AIMA agent will be reasonable and understand the situation. 1f600.svg
