Turist visa extension on Sao Antanao

Post new topic

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip to Cape Verde and plan to stay on São Antão for about 50 days. I’m from Poland (EU) and just realized that the visa is only issued for 30 days, which I unfortunately overlooked. Does anyone know if it’s possible to extend the visa easily at the police station in Ribeira Grande on São Antão?

I’d appreciate any advice or information you could share. Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

CVAngelo

Hi everyone. I have replied in private, but thought I should give everyone on the forum an abbreviated answer, since this question has been asked and answered many times.

Essentially, the time you will expend trying to extend a tourism visa for a few weeks is simply not worth the cost or the hassle, plus they keep your passport throughout the process of extension (so you won't be able to travel to other islands, nor will you have your only form of ID!)

Europeans and Americans often assume that something very bad will happen to them if they overstay their tourism visa. Nothing could be further from the reality of Cape Verde. CV is very poor and without European and American tourists, we would not have much of an economy. So they (the authorities) have zero problem with such tourists spending more extended time and thus more money in CV beyond the 30 days you're automatically given when you enter CV.

If you overstay your tourist visa by a month, just deal with it at the airport upon your departure. It's quick and easy. They won't put you in jail. They won't let you miss your flight. The absolute worse thing that can happen is that you pay a small fine which would be no greater than what it would have cost you to extend the visa, but with zero hassles. In most cases, they don't even fine you.

Cape Verde. No stress! It's a fact. And there will be no future consequences for having overstayed your 30-day tourist visa if you are from the EU or USA. They want you to stay as long as you wish and spend your money here. And you'll be welcomed back with open arms when you return.
