News sources .. best and worst?

Ref US sources ... I have never imbibed in MSNBC, CBS, ABC, CNN or Fox.  All of them offer infotainment, not news.  I used to get Reuters daily blast until their Slavery series (aimed at "reparations") a year or so ago.  No thank you.  AP is in the same group of leftists as CNN, ABC, etc.  What seems to be the norm today is finding a voice that resonates with you on X or YouTube or Facebook.  At least the filtering applied there will be agreeable to you.

In the main, I maintain a news blackout.  I sold my TV forty-four years ago (age 23) and never bought another one.  I have no idea who killed JR or what American Idol is.  But news has a way of finding me still.

I subscribe to Steve Herman's (Voice of America Chief Correspondent) substack.  SpaceX on X.  Several YT channels -- primarily with a Christian worldview.

I have an account with the BBC.  I also still listen to shortwave radio.  For example, Radio New Zealand, last night, and China Radio International.  NHK in Japan has good programming too.  Just keep in mind that all telecommunications are under the thumb of Big Brother.  TikTok, FB, YT, X, and all the rest have a vested interest in their own business.  That's first.  That's the main thing.  Producing and presenting 'actual news' is quite expensive, that's why so few organizations actually do it.

I beg to differ Fred. I do miss the printed version of the Jakarta Post especially at breakfast alongside my scrambled eggs and toast in my hotel. There were some delightful quirky stories and pictures of life in the capital that no tour guide could offer. An easy but informative read way ahead of its Manila equivalent The Manila (Dan's favourite comic read?) Bulletin.

Before you start guessing Fred NO thats not where I heard about the NCC exposé. Lets just say I shall be interviewing a lady DJ from our favourite Jakarta Jazz radio station soon at one of the cities new jazz bars: The Cocktail Club in Senayan in association with the London based Jazz FM

Exactly my thoughts on the "news" in the US today.  I'm inclined to believe that with the advent of the internet came the proliferation of news sources.  The mainstream outlets began losing share and had to shift from becoming actual journalistic hubs of unbiased talking points to taking ideological sides, if you will.  Ownership stakes in the various companies also played a role, I'm sure.

To whom do we listen? Nobody knows the sources better than locals. So who to seek or avoid?

The worst sources are the legacy cable and broadcast media. As others mention, they are largely political propaganda outlets which in general are heavily biased towards the left. I believe that the tendency of media outlets to be heavily biased left is also true in all of the CUNA countries. For example, is there any tory centered media in the UK?

Unlike some people who claim to have discarded their TVs, I have not. I simply do not have any connections to the antenna terminal on mine. No cable, no terrestrial, no satellite.

I do use the TV as a monitor for YouTube connections along with other web based "new media" and look at a variety of viewpoints, leftist and conservative, and formulate my opinions that way.

I suspect in countries like the UK, there is less tendedency of tory voters to use the internet sources for news and still rely on mainstream media which lacks center-right representation. They are inescapably liberal which helps explain their crushing defeat in their July 2024 elections. As I see it, the Tory govt seems to have done a poor job or at least a poor job at explaining their challenges to voters because of lack of media support. So Labour's win. Big deal, UK voters just signed up to make their situation worse. One Tory success was holding UK inflation at 2% although a major reason for their defeat is that prices were already unaffordable, ie prices fir everything including food and housing. So, no inflation but prices are too high so Tories get the boot without being able to explain or discuss the issues with voters. BREXIT had nothing to do with the 2024 UK elections:

Labour will now increase inflation by releasing the conservative government spending constraints that kept prices necessarily high  in recovering from the 2008 crisis.

UK will not be a good place to live in coming years with now-uncontrolled immigration, high inflation under labour and no improvement in the health care system because it will be unaffordable even (especially) under labour.

This is why we have potential expats like lotus eater on this this Forum. Such people know that it will be impossible to live in the homeland in coming years.

The opposite of course is true in the US where economic indicators such as the stock market and company projections all indicate a highly resurgent 4 years under Trump.

Like many Trump voters Dan you tend to shoot from the hip and make all kinds of assumptions which portrays ill informed ignorance.

However I am flattered that you are taking an interest in British politics which is far more sedentary than it is stateside right now.

It may surprise you that only 20% of eligible UK voters voted Labour. You are correct in that the UK media tilted left at the last election. It may also surprise you that I normally vote Tory. I actually voted for Nigel Farage (Trumps best mate) if only out of protest.

The ‘ natural’ party of government in the UK is the Tory party but every now and then the British fickle electorate like a change. I agree Labour has got off to a bad start. You are wrong about the media. The BBC is perceived as being towards the left but actually does a pretty good job of being impartial. The UK press is tilted towards the right but ultimately we are a nation of moderate politics.

Many US citizens I suspect ( right and left) would yearn for our political landscape today.

I spend most of my time watching UTube. I do catch the nightly news with Lester Holt from time to time on UTube. I watch the left & right reporting on the same stuff, it's amusing. I have not watch cable tv in years.

I read two newspapers online every morning. The Tribune Review a left leaning paper in Pittsburgh and the Las Vegas Review-Journal a right leaning paper. Those two cities were my past homes were.

As far as the Matt Gaetz reporting, originally said he resign early so a new republican can be sworn in. The left said he reigned so the investigation about him would not be revealed.

Well the senate/congress has a slush fund were millions of dollars were paid out incognito to protect the members over the years. They should release those findings too.

Years go during Clarence Thomas hearings going into his transgressions, Ted Kennedy was on the committee and sat there like a zombie.

Now for Matt Gaetz, the rap against him, he has not enough experienced to be the Attorney General and his choice was pure nepotism.

The left have an effective control of some papers such as the Guardian, but the right have more.

The Daily mail is hardly on its own in pushing the political right's agenda, sometimes even quitte far right.

As for broadcasters, the BBC is always pro US. At the moment their stance on Israel if anti, but I predict a change to pro-Israel stories when Trump takes office.

I will be very interested  to see if their position on Ukraine alters to suit the new US regime.

Thre tories lost because of years of corruption and mis-management. They were rubbish and deserved to lose (I miss Thatcher).

You are, in my opinion, totally right about the Labour party ... almost.

What only a local can see properly is how much Marxism there is in the party. I saw first hand what a bloody mess they are in just below the surface.

The far left will start to come out of the shadows and try a takeover of the party when they feel they have a chance.

The UK is a pretty terrible place now.

The tories messed the place up, but Labour make iit a lot worse. Pensioners are already seeing the problems, and they are just the start.

Hardly controlled immigration is a big issues that's been around for a while, and one that isn't going to get better under soppy 'human rights' politicians. We saw the riots some few weeks ago, and I can see more as literal boatloads of people cross illegally into England.

Now throw in the drug culture, and you have a .pigsty instead of a county.
