Hi! I am an Australian studying in Sydney and want to study in Holland. My first  preference is Amsterdam for sure, but I would like to know what are the best places for students out of Utrecht, Rotterdam and Maastricht. Coming from a big and vibrant city I am worries Maastricht may be too quiet - thoughts??

Thanks!
Sarah

Hi Sarah and welcome to Expat.com!

What are you willing to study there?

Hi Armand, thanks for replying!

It's not really a matter of what to study, as my university has a list of partner universities to choose from: (UvanA, Erasmus Uni, Utrecht Uni, Maastricht Uni). I just need to decide what cities would suit me best!

Out of those three I would definitely pick Utrecht. Because of the art school scene, it has a more eclectic and vibrant feel. Everyone seems to be in their 20-30s, once again probably due to the university. There are plenty of bars, cafes, and galleries. There is also a great live local music scene focused on indie/rock/punk, but bigger international acts come through as well. It's in the Randstad so it isn't too far from Amsterdam and the other major cities. I live in The Hague which is also great but if I had to choose all over again I would have picked Utrecht or Amsterdam

I've only hung out in Maastricht for a weekend, but my general first impression was quiet, old money, refined elderly folks, and homogeneous. However it was gorgeous and perfect for a weekend getaway, and had a very old school romantic feel to it.

Good luck with school!

thank you so much! useful advise :D
I will drop Maastricht from my list of exchange preferences, and I'm feeling a lot more confident about Utrecht - as I wasn't sure before.
