I am coming to Lobito in the new year.  I want to stay in contact with my family and I have an international phone with a front camera for video calls.  Is there service there for apps like Skype and Tango.  Who is the best and what are the costs.

Shame no one has replied to you. The Internet is there and the best option which I know of is TV Cabo, there are representative offices all around town, you just need to find out where they are. Its a service where they stream TV and Internet over a cable into your house. I am not sure of all the costs, the initial setup might be a bit pricey($500-$1000), but its probably the best and most reliable you will find.

For travelling and having Internet on the move I would suggest getting yourself a Unitel and Movicel 3G modems from both providers, then you know you should be covered for most areas where there is reception. Hope this helps.

Just remember that you will notice that when there is power failures sometimes the Internet is also off. Weird.

I tried Skype over the TV Cabo service and it works fine, but there will be problems sometimes due to incompatible networks etc, I suggest to turn of the camera when talking to family/friends since the live video streaming can be problematic at times. Use mostly voice if you can. Skype over these 3G modems in Angola is according to me a waste of time, it works 50% of the time and thats without video, although Angola are also updating their Internet service all the time. So maybe in 2012 things might be different. Just be careful what you say etc etc
