Penalty for delayed car import / registration.

Post new topic

Confused a lot

Hi,

a hypothetical question...

Suppose someone drove their UK car to Malta 3 or 4 months ago (via ferry from Italy) but did not realise they had to register it within 20 days but now wants to do so legally...

Suppose that person had already gotten their ID card so cannot claim tourist exemption and after realising the problem kept the car off road in a garage...

According to transport malta, you have to register the car within 20 days of arrival or else be fined 30 euro per day after that. Such a fine would be 2500+ euro.

Is there a way to avoid the fine?

For example, if one took a trip to Sicily with the car and thus had a new date of entry, would it be ok to submit it as proof of the car's entry when they started the registration process?

Thanks :-)

Hi,

we have had these cases on the forum before.

The last person was lucky and got his unregistered car back to France without being checked and came back with a different car.

But there is always a risk of getting caught and then having major problems.

Cheers

Waiting for more answers, there is a lot of people in that situation. Why person cannot store his car for restoration etc. Where is no law to store your tickets, anyone can modify pdf prints, and no company will give info about single cases.

Can't see the justice in those fines. Don't give a damn and don't sponsore the gov in case of fines.

Hi Maltamark,

of course there are laws and regulations in every country , including Malta. Whether you think they are right and so on is a different question but doesn't help much when you are confronted with them.

Go ahead and follow your own advice! But please report back on the forum whether you managed to get your car registered without paying the fine. 'Modifying PDF prints' could well be counted as outright fraud, depending what prints you are thinking of.
Try driving the car and not paying the fines ! Your car will soon be impounded , and then ?

Cheers

Don't know if there gonna be any help from this topic.
But my last words would be - contact one of the local car dealers and try to get as much info as possible. Cheers!
