Australian with EP, naming issue

Post new topic

AliasSG

G'day,
I'm an Aussie just accepted a job in Singapore and have started few weeks now. Everything is so far so good however there is one thing keeps bothering me. When the IPA letter and later EP card were issued they wrote the name in the order of FamilyName GivenName. I verified with MOM but they said it follows the Australian passport name order. And it is more confusing for my wife which her name is being in the wrong order as well.

Does this happen to all Aussies or other nationalities in Singapore?
Thanks.

Ok, but strangely my friend who's from US, his name on the EP card written as GivenName FamilyName format, which is the usual way.

Why there is no consistency on this?

I guess I am getting more confuse now because other documents such as bank account, etc. need to follow EP.

Different cultures have different naming conventions. For Chinese, for example, the first name is the family name. Many Indians and Malays have no family name, but use the father's namer as last name. Some Indonesians have only one name altogether. And spelling of the same non-Western name in Latin letters often differs from document to document.
Since Singapore is a cultural melting pot, these things are handled flexibly. Don't worry about it, you'll be fine no matter how it's written!
