Dear everyone,

I wonder whether a Senior Software Programmer from the U.S will have a good career opportunity in HCMC.

Or should he/she start a business for self?

I am looking for ward to your recommendation while searching on it.

Thank you and have a nice day :)

Hellow you,

He/she is going to have one hell of a time.  That is because much of what goes on here are knock-offs, or pirated junks, if you will...

Don't go there my good friend.

All depends on your areas of expertise there are lots of programmers here and demand for senior staff is reasonably buoyant. Lots of off shore programming here and a fair few development companies.
Well worth checking out the job boards and seeing what's being advertised.

Software's not my thing but I deal with plenty of companies that have in house programmers but be warned it's a tough market!

Agreed with laidbackfreak.

Really depends on your software expertise background. I am in the software business as well in APAC with HQ in USA. Vietnam has been doing very well especially with IT outsourcing. CNet survey put Vietnam behind China and India as these countries are becoming more expensive.

But if you want to find a job here, you will have to be contented with a local package unless a US company is willing to give you an ex-pat deal.

I have just signed up a large software partner in Hanoi and there is alway a demand for certain type of expertise. You may want to start with a more globalised Vietnamese company to leverage on your background. FPT Software or similar kind of companies may be a good start for you. Be warn though, this is a competitive job unless you are into leading technology like Cloud Computing or have lots of projects experience etc.

Hope this helps.

To Wild_1, laidbackfreak and MichaelChan:

Thanks a lot for your opinions.

From all the headache I have at the current work-place, it seems not easy at all once it involves foreign investment.

Hassles may come from nowhere.

The salary for a software engineer in Vietnam is NO WHERE near what it is in the US. There are many highly qualified Vietnamese programmers that get really low wages comparative. I think it would be best to start your own business in this field or if you have enough experience could get a management position that might pay you enough. I currently work for a global software company in HCMC so if you have any questions let me know.

Agree with MichaelChan and Jayhawk

Software programming is not my expertise, but I think it's best if you can secure a contract with a global or US company to work in VN before arrival. Local pay would be minuscule by comparison.

Otherwise, start your own.
