Post new topic

I've lived in Guatemala 12 yrs but am in the U.S. now. I want to come to mexico City  or Guanajato for a dental implant but want to bring my 14 lb dog. I heard a rumor that mexico is taxing dogs of recent that come to mexico on a tourist visa.   Does anyone know anything  about dogs in Mexico?  I'm going to post another asking just for dental implant specialists in and around Mex City.  thanks.

The most recent news on bringing dogs (pets) to Mexico is that airlines are not permitting them to fly in the cabin and must be caged and fly with the cargo. The airlines are citing a Mexican law that is recently being enforced. Check with the airline your going to book with for restrictions.

I'm not worried about the airline as my dog has assistant status but am concerned about the new "tax" on dogs that I've heard about. This would be another way to keep expaits from returning to Mexico and tourists that travel with their dogs at home.

The tax sounds like a Fox News report. Never heard of it. Check your source.

Just crossed the border with my three dogs.  No tax....but the paperwork requirement is now being enforced when it hasn't been in the past.  I haven't heard a thing about taxing pets coming into Mexico.

Good luck with your trip.

Ha I  might watch ABC News once in a while but you'll never find me in front of a Fox "news" entertainment program. I'm shocked every time I hear that someone watches or believes a word from  those people on Fox. Cut. Dice. Add. Misquote. Cut. Dice. Cut. Add. Dangerous.

Thanks for sharing about your dogs going over the border.

I have in the past driven but am  flying down since I'm going so much farther south.

About 8 years, ago  the last time that I drove through Mex. City I could not find a hotel anywhere that would let my dog in. Then someone told me there were several hotels 10 miles south but it turned out to be false. I arrived in Cuernavaca about midnight and found some motor hotel to stay in. Those are the types of experiences that make it worth the research!

I was sure there were hotels in Mexico City where I could have stayed with my dog back then.  She was a well educated friendly clean German Shepherd.  Today my dog is much smaller.  Internet is much more common, google is better etc. and forums are wonderful.

thanks all who responded.

Hi, I also have a dog and have read about travelling with her, but I have never seen anything about a tax since the airlines charge quite a bundle just to bring the dog in the first place :)You do need to bring updated medical records so I would go to a vet and get the correct medical information to show customs :D
