Hi,

My friend is getting a job as a doctor in Fredrikstad for 420.500,- kr/year.

Is this an acceptable offer? How much can %age of tax should be paid on it?

Whats the average amount of money required per month to live in Fredrikstad?

dmcart13

Hello,

I would guess he will pay around 36% income tax. It's the indirect taxes which are the killer, so if he wants to drive a car or drink or have fun in some way, he will have to pay tax for it. It should be possible to live on that salary in Fredrikstad, although I would have expected a doctor to have made a little more money than that. Perhaps that is the standard salary for a doctor.

But I heard in the end of the year, you can apply for Tax Return and you basically pay up only 10% of the tax.
Is it true?

I've never heard about anything like that. I think sometimes you can claim an extra tax deduction if you are a foreign worker for your first two years in the country, but it doesn't lower the tax you pay by that much. I think it's the indirect taxes which are the main problem in Norway. Income tax isn't so high. If you want to buy a car, drive it, smoke, drink, travel or eat out, then you will have to pay quite a lot.

A 420K NOK salary is not bad for Fredrisktad, you can have a decent live there with this. the tax rate will be around 36%, you may get a little back after the tax submission, but not at year end, this takes place the next year and you get the money in June. But what you will get back is marginal, so count on around one third of the salary being deducted.

Thanks AuNordDuMonde and dmcart13,

I have heard that doctors can easily earn more if they work overtime and its quite common. Is it true?
Any idea about how much more a doctor can earn if working overtime besides the basic salary?
