Saudi's

Post new topic

Hi Everyone,

I was having a conversation with a Saudi today who explained that every Saudi would prefer to 'kill themselves' than get a job that was not beneath a Manager.  He also went on to explain that ALL Saudi's are rich.  Also that all Saudi Bedouin are all very wealthy and goat herding is a very prestigious position because some goats go for £300,000.

Now, while i am writing this it sounds so ridiculous.  But is it true?  He mentioned that this is ONLY true Saudi's (indigenous).

Look forward to your replies...

There is no such thing like that, they young ones wipe tables at restaurants, the older working as security guards outside shopping malls, and in between they do everything from selling vegetables in the fruit market to selling carpets on the street.

slyshooter

They are quite normal, probably he was just pulling your leg.

I also told someone once that I have an oil well in my backyard and the major mode of transportation in saudia is camels.

He was adamant but persisted in saying that only real Saudi's have this mentality and wealth, not the 'foreign' Saudi's.  For example any one who is a true descendant of the Saudi Bedouin.

The young people, who clean tables etc., are they from other minority backgrounds?  Please be honest i am non judgemental but curious about other cultures and a keen traveller.

PS.  Any photo's as proof would really be helpful :-)

I don't like to feed the trolls and maybe you're not one of them, but I would like to let you know that your comment made me laugh pretty hard. :) How can you possibly believe that story? Seriously? A goat for $300.000? What does it do? Gold plated diary products? Or maybe instead of milk you get refined petrol? What about camels? Is $1.000.000 enough? That price makes pure blood Arabian horses look cheap. :)

PS Photos? Of what? Goats defecating diamond rings? :)
PPS I bet a few CEOs will reconsider their position and switch to goat herding after reading your comment. :)

Well, always remember big cities attract people from all icome levels. What you were told is not 100% true. Not all Saudis are rich and as Slyshooter said, many of them are working in jobs that were not accepted before. About the bedouins, it is true that most of them are rich, and their wealths come from goats and camels. They own hundereds or thousands of them, and their prices can hit unexpected values (few millions sometimes).

When you say "hundreds or thousands of them" you do realize that a figure of say 1 thousand goats represents a small herd (in terms of livestock farm size and manpower), right?

What kind of millions? British pounds? Indian rupees?

Well, hunderds of camels is not a small herd, knowing that the average cost of good ones is 4000 USD. One of my friends has witnessed an offer of about 4.5 millions USD for a camel.
Goats these days value about 300 USD, some other types cost up to 500 USD. Owning a 1000 means you have an average wealth of 400k USD. Considered rich I guess :)

As I've written before, the number is small in terms of manpower and farm size. You're talking about value. According to your logic, if you live in a very poor country and you have 2 camels, you own a big farm based on the fact that your wealth value is making you rich comparing to others.

Depending on the breed, the goat price range can vary between 100$ and 2000$. Pure breeds go up to $2k

A few figures here: http://www.ukgoats.co.uk/sale2.html#bo

As an analogy, you can buy a ford Mustang for $30k and sell it tomorrow with $25k. If your name is Shelby, then you'll sell the same car with $100k. Purchasing/selling a camel at an auction with $4.5m doesn't have anything to do with herding. Maybe it has to do with breeding and being a snob. Hopefully you will understand where I'm getting at.

Do we have a herdsman among us tonight to clear things out or is this thread becoming serious and the poetry from the the first post is fading away?

I've found more goats (majestic animals, BTW):
