Hi there,

We just moved to Grand Baie from New York last weekend, and i am looking for the best/fastest internet connection for my home office.

I went to EMTEL yesterday, and bought their "Home & Office" Internet modem that SUPPOSEDLY is compatible with 21Mbps speeds...i doubt it!

I've been using this since yesterday, and am not impressed with the speeds at all.

Can anyone recommend the fastest speeds in the Grand Baie area please....would be VERY VERY grateful!

cheers,

nik

Hi Nik,

Nik,

No matter how fast the *local* connection speed is, once you go off-island the traffic is heavily throttled. AFAIK, Maritius Telecom has a monopoly over all of the pipes leading to/from our little rock, and everyone else - even Emtel - has to hitch a ride with them for international connectivity.

The good news is that, if you know what you're doing, you can eek pretty close to the max speed out of a fixed ADSL connection. However, you'll *never* experience anything like the U.S.

My Comcast line in FL gives me 20Mbps down, and that's the most basic package. So coming back to the island each time equals taking a 10x performance hit on my surf speeds. Just another side "benefit" to living in paradise.

BTW, PM me about your kid as our school year begins next Thursday and we're actively enrolling both current and future students.

good morning nik, forget about this 21 mbs advertising bu**sh*t. check your speed with a real speed test like

http://www.enetsc.com/bandwidth.htm

when you dig more into the site you will find mauritius on place 170 among all countries

http://www.netindex.com/download/allcountries/

with 1,58 mbps in average.
which does not say much about what finally arrives at your end of the pipe.

i have experienced the internet development in africa since its beginning, from dial up to fiber and i can assure you, mauritius internet is, in general, not bad at all. for shure nothing to compare with American or European high speed fiber, but....
you need to develop a managing approach, means download heavy stuff at night hours, use the busy hours, when the pipes are throttled only for mails and other light stuff.

and take it easy, you cant change it, try to get a dsl access and even TV streaming is possible.

happy surfing Rainer

Sorry for the late response...my speeds are: 3.52Mbps (DL) and 0.16Mbps (UL)

so i GUESS i shouldn't complain....i guess......!

Hi RCK01, Yes you are right....a joy of the island i guess! So our daughter is going to the IPS British school in the North of the island, and starts tomorrow....we are living in Grand Baie, so it makes sense to send her there due to distance.

Hi aquawatch: thanks for your input too!

Hi All,

I have just moved to the island and wanted to know whether this isn’t still the case from your experiences since this post was last active) ?

Just who can give us a good download/ upload speed in the Grand Baie area?

My experience so far is only with Emtel and it’s not great right now...

Thanks a lot people!

George
