my wife is a british subject with an eu passport also a Australian passport I am Australian is it automatic that I can retire there?

Hi bri -
sorry I don't have a lot of info, but what I do know is this: I am married to a French citizen, and to live in France, I would still need to apply (but it should be almost automatic to get it). So I would think you are in a somewhat similar situation.
