Yesterday was a terrific day.  We had our housekeeper's daughters (the two we support in school) over for their annual end of school (and this year graduation for both) pool or beach party.  This year they chose the pool.   So along with a girlfriend they brought with them spent the day splashing and playing it the pool.  A BBQ hamburger lunch and lots of time playing with the dogs as well. I think our Rottie is in love with the younger one and  would not her side all day

The highlight of the day was when they each got a new laptop as a graduation present.  Their jaws  hit the ground and their eyes came out of there heads.  The older one especially  as she said this will make going to the University next year so much easier.  It took about 5 min before were checking out their facebook pages... go figure.

Anyway it was great to see them have a good time and to know we are making a difference.

Have a great Sunday.  For us just lazing around catching up from yesterday.  Also went to Sosua for dinner and to enjoy the street party with live music.  The street was packed with locals, Expats and a smattering of tourists that are in town.  Closing the main street to traffic was the best thing to happen here in a long time and should have been done years ago.

Bob K

planner

Wow,  you guys are awesome. What a difference you have made for them!!!! Enjoy your lazy Sunday.....

ok. there we go with our chikungunya story.
I live with a friend, we share the house. so he woke up Saturday, feeling terrible, with little red dots on the arms, neck, but it was not like a allergic reaction.
he thought that he was having a terrible flu. he had nauseas, and throwing up. he was burning in fever! I felt like 40 c degree maybe, he was moaning! his muscles and articulations were hurting him ,he couldnot walk properly.
i put him cold towels, gave him paracetamol 500mg,made him drink so many liquids...at night we went to emergency services. waited for a while. and doctor attention was so fast. he did not want to receive any shot. so they gave him tylex paracetamol 750 mg tablets for each 8 hours, that we have got to keep his fever down (he had problems with his ear and he does not hear with his right ear, because of another fever situation). i gave him electrolit solution to drink in little portions. (well we had to travel little bit to find a Saturday night open pharmacy. one of the pharmacy did not have paracetamol,it was interesting )
so it was a hard Saturday night ,sunday . today he is better, the fever is lower, he has that skin reaction suddenly appearing. but he can walk today even it hurts he says.
today we made blood exam. tomorrow we will take him to intern medicine consult.
this virus does not have a cure, treatment more than taking painkillers and fever medicines.

please use raid, off, any kind of repellent and take good care of yourselves.
it must be really painful, time and money spending too.
my greetings to all.

Bob K

Sorry about your friends illness.  The good thing about this virus is unlike Dengue you don't die from it. It is all pretty short lived but it can be a miserable 48 hours before things start to get better and 7-10 till basically gone. Some do have the joint pain for a time after this though.  It is also not contagious.

We never leave the house with out our OFF (25% DEET) on.  We call it "ode de DEET" the newest fragrance from France :D

Bob K

Xavier_Onassis

The CDC gives a review of the most useful repellents. DEET is the most effective ingredient,

planner

Okay let me update this based on my personal experience and others I have seen first hand.

Chikungunya seems to come in two or three strengths based on luck. I had it bad but many have a fairly light experience with it. Others have had it worse then me!

Mine lasted  almost 8 days the FIRST go around!  I had 6 days of fever,  nausea and severe pain.  Then it got better.   2 weeks or so later it came back for another  3 days.  No fever but spots and severe pain and a bit of  nausea.  And it came back AGAIN for another  3 days - spots and pain.  And it came back again for 2 days, this time again a bit easier.

Some get it easier for 3 days or so. DO not over do things!  It will likely come back again for a few more days.  You may get it full blown, or mild again. And it might come back again.  I know dozens of people who have had it recur multiple times so be very aware! IT is the same virus - it just has not left your body yet.

A very few get viral arthritis. I am one of those lucky few.  I am almost 3 months from my first outbreak and i still have  pain in my hands, feet, wrists, knees and shoulders.  It will eventually leave but can take up to 3 years! Yikes.  I do what I can whenever I can. Activity  does not help or hinder it at this stage.  I take advil during the day and something stronger at night to manage the pain. The mornings are the WORST time of day but you will get thru this.

As stated above - use repellent on your skin.  Fumigate your home and garden areas. Make sure you have screens on your windows. Use fans!  This is not fun, but it will not kill you.  And once you have had it, you won't get it again next year......

Sel OZ

oh God, it took you so many days and repeating scenes you to feel better. sorry.
wish you get better. check if you can get any other type of painkiller or any infusion.
yes i am going to buy an Off ,had been using the dark blue raid. i have never got biten in Cancun, they never get near to me. here they follow me!
it is so strange that the house that we rent does not have mosquito nets on the windows, also we have aguacate and mango trees to make it worse.
so as you said i need to get more kind of reppelents.i have this green spiral raid ,burning near to my feet while i am working. and keep my raid bottle so near SH&SH shake & shot .

i was searching about the mosquitoes of chikungunya, the females are the one infects you and during the day time.
Thank you all. he feels better. the fever did not disappear, but gone for a while,he seems cooler. last night he suddenly had that red dots again. i knew that it was going to take at least 2 weeks to get better, but i've always told him that he was going to be alright at 3rd day :) so in some cases brain is such a conditioning machine that helps us,and his defenses were working on it.  i was scared first day,but did not show it to him.
i write you back in a while, now i have got to get back to work.
greetings to all.

nicholas3035

Is this chikungunya caused by mosquitoe bites? Kinda jumping mid-story here, drawing inference from the talk of raid and off and DEET n stuff like that.

nicholas3035

Ok, just googled it. Im now informed.

Is this something that's new in DR. Is it a normal thing there.. Or this is something that happens once in a while...  Because I never heard the mention of chikungunya by any Dominicans I know, only heard of it here on the site, starting with Planner.

Bob K

It is not only here but all through the Caribbean and now spreading through the US as well.  In the 8 years we have been here this is the first time I have heard of it but I am sure it has been around somewhere. I don't think it is a new virus.

Bob K

Just to get back to "a day in the life" subject, here was my perfect Dominican Day yesterday and one of the reasons we are here.

Started off the day with an hour and a half deep tissue massage (same girl for 7+ years now)  and cost less than $21 with tip.  Then off to the beach for 6+ hours of relaxing and swimming and cost of chair, umbrella and small table was (with a tip for the beach guy) was just over $2.  Had a great lunch (bacon cheeseburger, fries, drink) for $6.50 including tax and tip.

All in all a perfect day and cost less than $30.  Try and get that in the US.  It was a difficult day, but someone had to do it :D:D:D

Have a great day everyone

Bob K

planner

Ahhhhh Bob, sounds awesome.

Here was my day: get up, think about Bob getting a massage and cry. Ok, fix makeup and make coffee.

Before 9 the electricity went out - call Edesur. Outage will last until about 3, run around d turning off everything not essential.  Work.

Think of Bob on the beach and vow to get to the beach.

Work.

Electricity comes back at 3 yay. Work more.

Electrlicity goes again at 6 pm!!!!!  No more work. Decide to join Bob and have a drink!!!

Seriously (mostly) that was my day......

Sel OZ

oh mister Bob! such a hard day you had! first chance i will get there to help you !
Planner, Edesur callings just have been so routine ,i guess you can not live without them  : )
yesterday i had to discuss on the phone with lawyer and government office, trying to explain the company and product stuff, overstressed. the bureaucracy is so slow,i thought it was slower in Mexico.
made shopping at bravo,as my friend is feeling better i prepared him the ribeye that he likes ,lol. actually they had a good meat.
i am looking forward for my birthday present that i am going to give myself, nice swimming days in bavaro(hope i can arrange it) (by the way any suggestments for a 2 night staying,3b hotel? (3b=bueno,bonito,barato) )

Bob K

Today was back to the grind.  By 10 am I had been to two grocery stores, shipping company, auto body shop checking on the progress of my truck (will done by tomorrow), pharmacy, veggie truck, and small colmado where I get the best baked ham in the area and she only has it fresh twice a week. it was a whole day's worth and not I get to go to Cabarete to pay bills and get provisions for our rental condo.

At least tomorrow I get to relax (not by a long shot) on our round trip drive to Santo Domingo and get our Cedulas.

We too lost our power last night for about 45 min.  Not bad as generator kicked right in

Bob K

Good morning. So far work work work. Electricity went out at 10:40. Lets see how long.....remember i live in a 24/7 zone!!!! HAHAHAHAHA

Planner you are losing your mind with out the electric and starting to stutter :D

Bob K

We have now officially reached the melting point for humans.  Currently it is 37C or 98F outside. Very uncomfortable.  It was nice driving back and forth to Cabarete because of he AC in the car.

Where is the RAIN!!!!

Bob K

Sel OZ

yes it was terribly hot yesterday! and today too.
Planner I see it is not Murphy anymore, it is EDESUR. They cut off the energy from 13:00 to 17:00 .
My greetings to all, have a lovely day .

planner

Our electricity went out no less the 4 separate time yesterday!!  Already today it has gone out twice. I do not understand why it goes out for 20 to 30 minutes???   Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Stuttering..... haahahahah  That actually happened when the electricity went out and my inverter kicked in......  somehow my post got reposted............!

And on the news today - the gov't is getting back involved in the electricity companies!! OH JOY!!!!!

nicholas3035

Hey Planner! I seen those 4 reposts of the same message, I was saying wtf lol. I figured it had to be some explanation for it.

As for the power going out so much..  yikes, that sure seems like something that it would take a lot of getting used to..  I know you guys can do without those days in the life.  maybe it's just something you guys get used to, liiving in DR

It's a our way of life Nick.
Get used to it or spend 15,000 (US) for
Solar, inverter & batteries.

planner

We get used to a lot here. BUT lets be very clear - the PROS of living here clearly outweigh the CONS...... :D

nicholas3035

I can imagine that part Planner because if not the case u guys wouldnt still be living there by choice.

Even with that, just saying that it seems like a really annoying thing, that at any time, without warning or notice the power goes out, Ill speak 4 myself anyways. Out of all the things I've learned from the site, that one sounds to be the one for a spoiled American like me (lol) addicted 2 electricity use (lol), but also we do adapt to our circumstances.  Like, maybe upon living there for a year or 2 or 10 i could become used 2 it also.

Bob K

Quick update. Went to SD this morning via taxi (well worth the money) for our cedulas.  Process actually seemed organized and we were in and out in just over an hour.  Left us enough time to stop in Tomboiril (sp) for a refill on cigars.

Bob K

planner

Nice!!!! Can I ask how much the taxi cost???
