Hi Baber,
If you have a British passport you just need to find work in Gibraltar, get somewhere to live in Gib and then visit the registry office to register for the ID card. You need proof of ID (Passport) some recent passport photos (to make your card), proof of address (tenancy agreement or utilities bill) proof of employment (contract and payslips) and it cost £5 to process the forms.
Check out this link:

After you have that you can apply for the medical card at the medical centre in the ICC which is in the centre of town. Hope that helps :-)

Hi BtR,

do you know how the health care system works for a retired Brit? working teacher wife, pension, some income, we'll buy a flat, but I'll have no job!

If your wife is working then you can apply for the ID card at the same time as her, as she is 'supporting' you. Your wife will just need to provide proof of employment when you apply for it. My husband had his HR dept write a letter saying he was / is still employed. The first card you get lasts a year, after that you get it renewed and it last for four years. (Ours have worked out that way, so I assume that is standard!) The same goes for the health card!

Hi BotR,

many thanks for reply, that's reassuring, I was worried that as I don't intend to work there might be a problem getting health cover! Private insurance quotes are expensive! My wife needs to get the residence registration card so she can get the same for our daughter and enrol her at Westside girls comp - she's 14.... Hopefully then I can be my wife's dependent, sounds good, as I intend to retire... She has a job offer from the education Dept, and we are avidly awaiting the letter to hear what will be on offer. We need to come over and do some flat hunting, the estate agents I have contacted can't be bothered with people in the UK it seems... being helpful without the buyer being in Gib is asking too much. Property looks expensive but that's the price you have to pay I guess... Any advice you can offer?

many thanks Nick

Hey Nick,

The estate agent thing is  funny thing. We sent a list of what we were looking for three months before we were moving (we just rent) and the estate agent we were advised to use showed us two let properties and then one so far out of our budget it was insane and then another that wouldn't be available until a month after we moved here! So a massive waste of time, luckily a chance meeting put us in contact with Find-a-property and I can't speak highly enough of them, if you are looking to buy I would maybe hold fire for six months and lease a place, just so you get to know Gibraltar and then you can really settle where you want. I know it is tiny, but it offers a fairly big range of locations and styles of property. For help on leasing a place speak to Darren at Find-a-property. He is awesome, helpful and full of ideas. Otherwise email him anyway and he will put you in contact with the correct agent!

I did a post on my blog of local agents, which might be helpful as well.

Don't know where you are at with this but I would suggest you buy as soon as possible as renting is a big drain unless it is being paid by a company.  Secondly as a pensioner you should be able to get ID in your own right.

I was in Spain when we looked for places.  I travelled to Gib and stayed in Ocean Heights for a few nights while I looked at properties. As ever it always depends on your budget, but there is usually something that will fit depending on how choosy you are.

We have a family renting in our block, three children, so renting isn't difficult, just expensive. I wouldn't get sucked into a six month contract but my POV. Four and a half grand for what?  Or six? (we have friends in water gardens paying 1K a month).

Cheaper to visit, bite the bullet and buy.  If you do decide to rent though, you need a legitimate contract. That is essential.  Mail me if you want more info.
