Hiya, I am an international school teacher and thinking of working in HCMC as I fancy somewhere different to be honest than Malaysia although not certain yet (being single makes the idea easier!)

Visiting for ten days have a couple of couchsurfers who want to meet up but would be nice to meet expats who work in hcmc and locals to get a better idea of life there. Also nice to be shown some nice restaurants night life as also a holiday :)

First time in Vietnam but heard good things from friends who visited it. I have lived in rural Thailand and Bangkok before as well as Maldives and HK. So no stranger to settling in and making friends etc.

I know this is an open question (!) as a guide I have been told 500 USD will get a good condo. About right? Can you hire/lease cars? In KL I lease as less hassle. any idea how much? for other expenses I can estimate in person to see what sort of salary I want to get but would 4,000 USD a month be considered good? (as in middle class lifestyle)

Welcome to Vietnam!
Depends on what facilities you need in your condominium and what area you prefer, surely you will get one below $500.
Also you can rent a car with certain terms and conditions.
:) We can consider any salary but don't expect 'more' from a country like Vietnam! Also before you apply for VN teaching job better you should check some previous postings in this blog about teaching in Vietnam. Please don't think am discouraging you. Good luck!

Hi well I earn a lot more than 4k a month so already discounted it for cost of living.

When I say international schools I mean proper ones as I am UK qualified teacher, not a tefler (I have done that before I qualified) not the cowboy outfits springing up all over Asia and I presume same in Vietnam.

Hi thanks. I will be in my fifth year in KL (2+3) and unless I meet the love of my life here soon I am thinking of a move! I had a Vietnamese couchsurfer recently and she was very intelligent and effective at the ripe old age of 23. That intrigued me a bit and want to see more

What is HCMC like vs BKK? Big chaotic?
