Errr!......anybody got any idea at all about the safety record of these things on Maltese roads. 

Would only use it for short journies (say apartment to beach and back etc)

Mike...by the look of the cars here - this shouldnt be a problem.... finding one or importing one may be.

I am/have seriously considered this option, also that of using a golf buggy, just around locally.

There are a couple of ATV's running around Mellieha, (on English plates for at least two years). The type where you sit inside a roll cage but they look  a little OTT.

Could you import one with tracks on it and says it commercial vehicle and pay less or no import duty (not sure how the import duty works on commercial vehicals)

Right....that's it then. Going to get one when we eventually get out there.  Seen a couple of good ones (two seaters) on Maltapark; prices are good (between €2K and €2.5K).  Should be really handy for 'pootling' around on and going to the beach.

Not sure of the law Terry, however, one of the ads I saw said it came with two helmets. 

Even if it was not the law I wouldn't venture out on one without a 'lid'........that's just asking for trouble.

Remember that most quads have a solid rear drive (no differential) therefore unless you know how to effectively slide the back end around corners on tarmac, they can be a little interesting to drive on a tarmac 'grippy' surface to say the least!

Great fun but can also be very dangerous...Take care and deffo wear a skid lid!

Thanks Mike.......that is VERY helpful information.  I think I'll get myself on one over here first and speak to an 'expert' about using them on the road before committing to, what could be, a silly venture (wouldn't want to put my lovely Rose at any risk).

Hi guys

Quad bikes are really good and fun to drive, easy to park, and if you will be using it to go to the beach you will have the perfect means of transportation and parking facilities.

I used to drive a quad bike for two years when living in Mellieha and used to go through the village down to the beach.  Believe me you can speed, however as any other vehicle you need to slow down during the bends or you will be asking for trouble. You need to slow down much more than you usually do with a car.

At those days there was no need of the crash helmet, however now helmets are compulsory with use of quad bikes (in that sense they are classified as bikes).  Otherwise all you need is the driving licence and insurance and road licence.

There are a few shops here in Malta that sell them too.  And I would suggest you bring your car insurance documents back at home with you just in case the Insurance Companies will ask you for more papers.

But beware...it is illegal to go with the quad bikes on the beach i.e. the sand itself (unfortunately that's one of the fun things to do with owning a quad bike).
