June Holiday Pay

Hello,

Is the "holiday pay" (normally received at end of June) the salary you will get for the month of June ?

So instead of getting a normal salary on June (just like other months) you will get a "holiday pay". Or is it "holiday pay" + normal salary that you will get at the end of June.

I started work just last Jan 2013 in Norway meaning no work performed for the whole 2012 on which to base the "holiday pay".
HR told me i'll get nothing at the end of this month. Why is this? What happens to the work hours performed on the month of June.

Somebody here in the forum has the same experience or was hired on the earlier part of the year? I would appreciate some comments.

Cheers

Paolo

As far as I understand it, and based on my first year working in Norway, you don't get anything that month if you haven't worked the previous year. The money we get paid in June is not salary, and is based on our contributions from the previous year. If you made no contributions, then their is no money to pay you. Any work you perform in June is paid for through the salary you get the rest of the year, as I understand it. I think your only choices are to accept that you get no money, or not take any holiday and get a salary. The ability to do this depends on your employer. It might be too late to do anything now though.

Holiday pay law is complicated, also for Norwegians and for HR department here. You are paid over 12 months, so you are entitled of a pay in June. Practically and due the absence of a tax in the holiday pay, employeers usually consider you take all your vacations in June and then pay you this month the holiday pay instead of the normal salary.

If you do not intend to take holiday this year, you must indicate this to your HR department. They will then pay you a normal salary in June. If you take days off at some point in the year, they will be deducted from your salary.
