Flat steel plate

Post new topic

MikeFF

Guys,

I'm looking for a flat steel plate/sheet, about 1-2mm thick, 500mm x 250mm....doesn't have to be exact to that dimensions but thereabouts, it has to be magnetic i.e. not stainless steel.

Where can I get one?

Thanks in advance.

Regards
Mike

Sounds like the tin variety that's used for roofing - am I right?  Try driving up and down your street until you find a building materials shop.  Then ask them to hammer the roofing sheet flat and cut to your dimension.

Thanks for the tip...but I doubt that they can knock it 'flat'. But I'll be looking for building material supply shops.

Well what are you going to use it for?  Generally steel/tin is used for roofing and they make them wiggly like that at the factory, then transport them to be resold at material supply shops throughout the city.  A flat sheet doesn't have any structure so not many people demand them on the retail side.  We're talking about one sheet right?  You want to make a wall so you can stick magnets on it?

Well, there's always road construction....all you gotta do is bring one of those wiggly sheets and slip the steamroller operator a 50,000 VND note and he'll run over it for you. TA DA, flat sheet!

You want an unmachined piece of steel plate.  You should not have to buy it already milled for some specific purpose and pay to un-machine it.

I have a hard time believing this would be hard to obtain here, but then, three times now we've been unable to buy something off the shelf in BigC because the PLU entry was wrong.  The cashier sits there helpless, unable to override it with the price, so maybe getting a steel plate takes a signature from an official in Hanoi too.

You'd think someone would fix the database after the first time.

It will be used as a magnetic building board.

Print that photo out and go to a door maker.  Or a steelworker and ask them.  Some doors are made using steel sheets.

if I can find a 'door maker' or steel worker!

What district are you in?  I'm not in HCMC but this guy has been very helpful to Expats here.  Mind you I've never met him but just know him by reputation from this blog.

Unless he gets on here and posts something, you can PM him.  Tell chamavietnam that THD sent ya and said he is a good guy that you can trust to tell you where to find steel plates in HCMC (or door maker or steel worker in HCMC).  This will put a little pressure on him to help you out.  :P

MikeFF

I'm in District 10...thanks, I'll PM him.

Guys!
Unfortunately am not so sure about the street which sells these kind of materials :D But am sure if you can find out a shop which selling roofing sheets and other hardware, there you can see it or they will guide you!
@THD: Thanks for the trust but this time...:P

I just realised that the 'mobile food stations' are made of some sort of steel? Where are these manufactured? Looks very possible that I might get a small sheet from them.

Thanks in advance.
