Hi all,
Newbie on the Portugal forum? Dont know how to start?
This thread is for you
We invite you to introduce yourself on this topic, to share with us your expat story if you are already living in the country, or to tell us more on your expat projects in Portugal if you are planning to move there.
It will enable us to help you better but above all to wish you a warm welcome.
Welcome on board!
Hi, I'm Barbara and I am planning to move to Portugal with my husband Doug and my dog Roxy. Our love affair with Portugal began around 10 years ago when we visited northern Portugal on a pre-marriage honeymoon. A couple of years later we bought half a ruin in the mountains near Coimbra with friends. It is now a lovely rustic hideaway and we have spent several months of the year there on several occasions.
We are now in our late fifties (what already!?) and we are thinking of moving to Portugal permanently. However, we are tempted to make our base in Lisbon rather than in our rural retreat. We are unclear about the expat scene and opportunities for networking and finding interesting things to do - any suggestions? We are keen to take on a project of some sort - I used to teach English to postgraduate research students and Doug is a businessman.
We love Fado and Portuguese wine and we are learning Portuguese (not easy!). Our heart is there - we just have to work out the logistics!
hi. I am Kasia and I am planning to move to Portugal (Porto) with my friend. We had opportunity to visit some places in Portugal, and what we can say now: WE LOVE PORTUGAL
I am retiring at the end of this year...and look forward to drinking lots of wine and listing to Fado...I am trying to learn a little portuguese before I get there...so I can get around easier....from all the things I have read Lisbon is the place for
me...close to the rest of Europe but not quite as expensive...

Hi All,
I'm joining you today from Ireland :-)
I lived in Lisbon for a year from 2002 -2003 and loved it! I returned to Ireland because my Dad wasn't well but thankfully he made a full recovery since. So here I am 11 years later considering going back to Lisboa, only this time I'll have my 6 year old daughter with me. (I'm a 31 year old single Mom) It's something we've spoken alot about over the last 12 months but we don't have a solid plan yet. The way I see it is that if it doesn't work out, we can always go back to Ireland. Would I be crazy not to give it a go?? :-)
thansk for their support

We are planning to retire to Portugal in 2017, I would like to get some advices on which area to select.
We are living in town, we like the sea, the countryside fresh air, but we don't want to be isolated in winter, so which
area would you advise to look.
best regards
Marc

Hi everyone, I'm James. I'm a carpenter, here with all my tools, living in a Portuguese lady's house in the North, helping out in exchange for workshop space and some meals.
I'm determined to learn the language, and plan, hopefully, to go to a language school in Lisbon for a month.

Hi all,
I am planning to move to Portugal very soon. I have 2 lovely dogs and for me to take them to NZ I have to stay in an approved country like Portugal for 6+ months and then only I can move them there. I am here to take any advice and help in finding and understanding the place and any other experience you all might have had.
Rental property, where to live (quite place, no city noise), Vet in the area...any advise and help me understand the place would be appreciated.
Bharat
Hello Marc and Mieke,
Read your post. I am planning to come to Portugal. Can you please let me know if you both live in a city area or Open/Village area and also is there a Registered Vet in the area? What is the basic cost for a visit. I have 2 Labs and I plan to move there very soon. Is it hard to find property in rent there and is it expensive...sorry to many questions, but I see you guys already have a dog, so though will ask you.
Thanks in advance
Brett
Hi I'm Leonie
I have recently moved to Carcavelos near Cascais, Lisbon with my husband who is in the aviation business. I love it here, although missing my friends and family back in the UK. It is great being near the beach and being able to explore Lisbon and Cascais and go for drives along the coast and into the country. We have brought our dog and cat with us! I do some work from home, copywriting, but that can get a bit isolating so I'm looking to make friends here. I have a degree in education - taught for many years and have taught English abroad before, in Madrid, so will be looking for a few students a week - both to get to know people and to earn some money.
Hello everyone..
I am new here.
I am currently staying in Porto.. I am doing my MBA in Lisbon.
Looking forward to meet other expats and make friends.

Hi there,
My name is Linda and I will be moving to Lisbon, Portugal with my partner and my two kitties. My partner is Portuguese and he wants to come home to be with his family.
I am excited for the change and am interested in meeting new people, making friends, finding work and learning Portuguese to be able to speak fluently.
It is such a beautiful country and I can't wait to be there permanently.
Hi I work in Customs and may be moving to Lisbon next year to live and work.
Really excited about this but filled with an air of trepidation as both myself and wife Sue have never lived or worked abroadd before.
Customs will provide language training so that's good but Sue will be leaving her job and was wondering if she may be able to find part time work either paid or voluntary in Lisbon?
John
Hi
What does Sue do now? I live in the Cascais / Carcavelos region as my husband works for a Portuguese company. I have been able to work from home doing some copywriting, which gives me a little income. Has she thought about that?
Where will you be based? Everyone is really friendly here - but it takes a while to make friends.
Hi
Thanks for your reply! Sue currently works in an Italian Boutique but has previously worked as an aromatherapist.
We've got a blank canvass as to where we can live but we'd like to base ourselves in the centre of Lisbon but maybe close to the beach like yourself! That sounds brilliant. I will be based at the British Embassy so not sure at the moment where that is in relation to the centre, beach etc. The Cascais/carcavelos region sounds good but I'd like to be able to "walk into work" ?
