JEDDAH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah on Monday unveiled Saudi Arabia’s first car, which was manufactured by engineers at King Saud University (KSU) in Riyadh. The car is named Ghazal 1.

King Abdullah watched pictures of the various phases of the car’s manufacturing before pressing an electronic button to mark its inauguration. He congratulated all those who worked to make the project a reality.

The car is designed to match the climate of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries.

See pic of car here:

Is it just me or is that car one ugly piece of mechanical engineering?

Though one should appreciate their research effort.

It looks great, no doubt.

The BeerHolders only see the beauty of the bottom

I think it's a terrible idea for the Saudis to begin an auto manufacturing sector.  They don't have enough of a population to support one, and unless their engineering and marketing are spot on (both things they seem to have to hire foreigners for) they are going to waste a lot of money.

Malaysia tried this some years ago and it has been more of a burden than a blessing for them.  They created cars that were "affordable" but didn't have a highway infrastructure to support a car-owning populace.

I think this is a terrible, terrible idea.  I also didn't think the SUV shown looked all that hot, to be honest.

It is still not very clear that this will be the beginning of a massive "booming" auto industry in KSA. As has been seen before they do like some hype and publcity in venturing into this type of R&D that shows the world that they do have some grey matter upstairs unlike the joke thats floating around in social circles about the most expensive brain on earth.

Lets give them some credit for the endeavor and achievemnt and move on. I don think I will be buying a Gazal-I for myself. I will still prefer the grand old "Colonial" Landrover Discovery, anytime, anyplace.

Agreed,

I'll go for the Hummer 1st G though. :/

Yes, I've noticed this, even where I work.  Some big project, big plans, lots of hype ... and a few months later, you say, 'Whatever happened to ...' and nobody knows.
