I am due out to Libya in 2 weeks, however have been told by the bank here that you are unable to get Libyan currency.

I was thinking of bringing out some US Dollars to change when I get here.

Any advice on what best to do?

LibyanJag

I've changed both GBP ( english ) and euros at Tripoli airport with no problem whasoever.

Remember to bring your own supply of irn bru . . .

Thanks for that.

Noted about the Irn-Bru, will miss a roll in square sausage more!

Mudman

Banks and some supermarkets will change currency. They like the 50 euro note, but not 20s or smaller. There are ATMs at the airport too and some in town.

Take your square sausage with you mate, no problems(the steak and onion ones are the best). As Mudman says, you get a higher rate of exchange for a higher denomination note (strange but true). Withdraw LYD at the airport (tell your bank that you will be in Libya, or your account might be suspended), and exchange in most of the mobile phone shops, or gold souks. If you are going to be in Tripoli drop me a pm and I will give you my mobile number, and we can meet up if you want. Oh aye and get ready for the heat, it is starting to build up now, the humidity will be a killer soon.

Thanks for the info, will stick to the higher notes. Not sure where I will be based yet, hope to know in the next week.

Will get in touch once I am over.
