Hi! One of the best way to find a job in Norway is the internet. Contact the Nav (ex AETAT) which is the national employment agency. The site has an english version (www.nav.no). Tip for your search: before starting seeking for a job, type "french" or "english" or whatever language as a key word. You will find dozens of jobs that require language skills. It is essential to speak english but not necessarily norwegian to occupy several positions in Norway, especially in the oil or gas industry.

It can be difficult to "break into" the Norwegian job market, but it is possible with perseverance and a bit of luck!

Hi Tuca !

The first step would be to learn Norwegian...for a start ! :)

Best of luck,

Hervé

well, even if you will learn Norwegian, it will not be easy to find a job in Norway. the priority is always for people who got education in Norway.

That simply isn't true, and is a violation of the laws of the common labour market.  If an employer selects a Norwegian over a more qualified candidate, simply because of this candidates nationality, then that is discrimination, and a crime.  Now, it is also illegal to discriminate based on Norwegian language ability if the job does not require fluency in Norwegian.

Of course, learning Norwegian is in your best interest, and I urge anyone job seeking in Norway to start learning now.

Good advice. While it's not essential to know Norwegian, it does make it a lot more difficult to find work.

Apply for jobs and let them know that you're trying to learn and maybe they'll accommodate that. It worked for me.

Sorry to disagree, while it could be punishable by law, it is not a crime. The case law is very limited so far on these matters and the courts have granted judgements to the both sides. Consequently, one shall not count on this law to find a job in Norway.

MamaPanda

I agree with AuNordDuMonde and disagree with sctld. Education in Norway DOES matter.

It might not be fair but it is most certainly the way things are, and I have been told this as well -- that had I done my undergrad in Norway I would have a much better chance of getting a job in my field. A friend who is a qualified nurse from the U.S. has also been told she must do her course work and practicum over in Norway ... she has so far appealed twice.

I have to say that trying to find work in Norway with no knowledge of Norwegian is pretty much impossible. Saying that, I was extremely lucky in getting a job at an International School where they teach in English. I'm only working as a Teaching Assistant and the pay is not all that great (especially as my boyfriend is a full-time student). I wrote a letter and sent my CV before I left for Norway and managed to get an interview.

If I could do things differently, I would definitely recommend doing some intensive Norwegian classes before you move out here. Unfortunately NAV tends to not be very helpful at all from what I've heard from fellow British/American friends here. If you don't speak Norwegian then they are pretty much unhelpful in finding you a job.

have a friend who works in Oslo as a sushi chef she was telling me that knowing Norwegian is not a must all people speaks English she said all positive things... would be nice to know... i think i'm just going to fly out there and find it out myself. there is lots of opportunities in Norway at the moment. (only if you have a profession.)

Almost everyone in Norway does speak English, but not all of them like to. Most employers will expect their employees to speak Norwegian, particularly if they are dealing with members of the public. There may be exceptions, for instance if you speak French and English and work in a French restaurant, you can probably get by without speaking Norwegian. Other exceptions are for highly skilled or highly educated workers, who can get by with English. For these people, Norwegian is an advantage but not always essential.
