Exemptions from tax

Hi everyone,

I will be moving to Malta in a week or so. I will be going straight into a job for minimum 12 months and will be bringing my car from London. (I have only owned it for 7 months.)

I understand that as I will be moving to Malta to work under a contract that the car will be exempt from importation tax, however I cannot understand whether the tax due will simply be suspended for 12 months, or if it will be waived completely or replaced by a nominal fee at the end of the 12 month period.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Many thanks in advance.

Terry,

Thanks. Seems that as I intend to register / reside in Malta then I cannot get around it and will have to stump up the cash! Thanks for your help.

Correct, once you are resident or intend to become a resident then you will have to register your car.

I think that if you have owned the vehicle for 2 years you are exempt  from the tax.Can anyone tell me if this is correct,

This link explains the exemption but be aware you will have to provide proof, this can entail bank statements, ferry tickets, rental contracts etc
