Hello there, I have recently decided to have a new start abroad and though my research on the Scandanavian countries are premature, an eagerness in me prompt this registration and further questions to follow. I only speak English and is British/Caribbean... Can anyone tell me what are my job prospects? Friends/dating making and general livelihood expectancy is? I know this is relative. A timeline? Anything is appreciated, even pre -arrival friends so I am not a loner once I get there. Lastly, which Scandanavian country appeals more given the aforementioned question given? Many thanks C

Christine

Hi Newstart30,

Welcome to Expat.com! :)

I created a new topic as from your post on the Norway forum for better visibility.

Hi newstart30,

first of all: welcome to the forum!
Your question has been asked (and answered) many times before an I recommend to browse a little in the "work" section of the forum. e.g.:
https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=436634https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=437363https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=435044https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=434820
To cut it short: Your chances of getting a job depend on your qualifications and language skills. As a non-EU citizen you need to offer professional skills they can't find in their own country and the employer has to proof that there were no qualified European applicants. It is very difficult but not impossible. Not speaking the language makes it even harder to find a job.
I can't really advise you on social and cultural aspects, since it depends on where you end up. Oslo has completely different options than a small town in the north, for example. I suggest to visit the countries you consider attractive before you jump into moving. And remember- the winters can be long and dark....

Hope it helped a little...

Hi newstart30,

I just realised, that you might have a UK passport and therefor easier access to the Scandinavian job market. I apologise for my wrong assumptions!
One other link is here: https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.p … 22#2341665

In general the scandinavian culture is a bit more reserved and introvert compared to the British or rest of the EU. That being said, there are always exceptions...
But speaking the language is a key to understanding and participating in their culture.

Why Norway? Is there something about your skill set that leads you to believe Norway NEEDS you? If not, I would expend your valuable time and energies elsewhere. Most people I know working in Norway came to Norway because they were offered work at professional salaries whilst they were still outside of Norway. Most of these people have now left Norway having worked there for decades and found the attitude towards foreigners in Norway unhelpful regarding settling in Norway. I would advise you spend two years fully checking all relevant laws before moving anywhere especially with Norway since you can easily wait 360 days for a reply from The Kingdom of Norway's government departments.
