Buying GOLD in SA

Post new topic

Preoria

Hi forum readers,

as I introduced myself a couple months back, I am moving to Riyadh this month and staying until Christmas. I've already had many of my questions answered by reading the threads (thank you!), but this I haven't seen anywhere.

A family friend recently asked me to bring her a golden bracelet, ring or a necklace for about hundred dollars as a souvenir from SA. (Which she will pay for herself, but that's beside the point. :) ) As I am quite a newbie what comes to travelling and especially bying golden jewels abroad, I'm wondering how to know where to buy it from? Do the malls have reliable-but-affordable jewel shops where I will not be screwed as I know practically nothing about the gold stamps or the value of gold and probably look like that too? :)

How about customs, will it be ok to take the golden jewel out of the country without any customs? I'm not comfortable lying at the customs that the jewel is old or mine etc.

Well thank you for answering all the numerous questions on this forum, this is surely appreciated!

There are is a famous Gold Souq in Riyadh which I can point out to you , id recommend you have a friend who speaks arabic because much of the shop keepers arent that big on English , and They'd consider a foreigner a good shot to increase the price a bit.

regarding going out of the country they have no business whatsoever unless you have stuff that is worth more than 60000 Sr i wether it was gold or Muffins , point being if its more than 60000 Sr tell them before hand!

and thats what I could think of thus far , time to go to bed!

Oh right and there are jewel stores in Malls , but I dont know that much about these places due to the fact Im more of a Tiffany guy (A) , our tiffany stores are much more expensive than their website sigh,

Yeah, it's always great to see I've typed "bying" instead of "buying". Guess I could blame the late time for the stupid typos, but I won't. It's just me. :)

So it doesn't matter at all what you take out of the country, as long as it's under 60000 Sr? It sounds like quite much, 16 000 US dollars. Oh well, if that's correct I won't have a problem at all. Thanks for the tip about a gold souq in Riyadh, I might ask details later, if you don't mind.

Khalid is right about the souq.  After you get here, I can take you to the guy my colleagues all use, if you wish.  He speaks good English and he'll give you a cup of mint tea, too ;)

Oh, and I should probably add that gold isn't particularly cheap here compared to other places.  I've heard a lot of people complaining about the increased prices.

Preoria

Oh, thanks Alliecat! All I want to do is to make my friend happy and not buy her a fancy-but-fake bracelet. That would be a disaster. :)

As I don't speak Arabic and I'm not accustomed to local style of bargaining I'm well aware that I'm an easy target for a profitable scam.

...Can't wait to step on that plane!! :D
