The holiday season in Kenya

Post new topic

Priscilla

Hello everyone,

Are you about to celebrate the holiday season in Kenya? In many countries and cultures, the festive season is the time for happiness and reunions/gatherings. Is it so in Kenya? How do Kenyans celebrate this very special time of the year?

What about you? Will you spend the holiday season in your host country or in your home country? Will there be expat reunions/celebrations/parties in your region/town/area?

Thank you in advance for sharing!

Priscilla

Traditionally, the Christmas holiday season has been about travelling to spend Christmas with family, which would include going to church.  You may expect to roast a goat for Christmas dinner (you see lots of them on sale on the roadsides at this time of the year).

Christmas gifts traditionally would be small things that you might need -  clothing etc.

Increasingly though, especially in Nairobi and many resort hotels, Christmas is assuming a more 'western' mantle, with lights and decorations being put up and christmas advertising on the TV.  Many hotels and restaurants will serve a traditional Christmas dinner, these days.  Its a much lower key event in Kenya, than in my home country, the UK!
