Return or One way airticket

Im a British citizen living in South Africa. We are relocating to Malta. Do we buy a one way ticket or do we have to buy a return ticket. My husband and children are South African.

We came on holiday on one way tickets so we could decide when to go back. EU to EU though but cannot see why it wouldn't work from elsewhere.

Non EU people immigrating to the UK needs an open return ticket so that the gov does not need to carry your deportation costs should shit happens

No idea how that works here or if airlines even still sell such tickets tbh

If you are relocating it's normal to get ow ticket. The questions may arise with the airline. They have the right to request a return ticket if you can't prove you are coming for good. An alternative would be to get your ow ticket to Malta and then a reservation ( not paid) back using a different airline. Just in case.
