If you are a true freelancer - this term in German ("Freiberufler")  fits only a very limited range of professions - then you are treated preferentially and the buerocracy is less. Graphic designers are not among those professions, but depending on what exatly you do, you might fall under artists.
If so, your situation is decribed in the following Wikipedia page:
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freier_Beruf_(Deutschland)
If your German is not enough to nunderstand this (German) Wikipedia page, you might want to engage a good startup consultant or a lawyer, accountant and tax consultant.
If you are not a freelancer under German law, you must register a company to do your business. For that you should definitely seek professional help.
(Now you know why Germany doesn't feature in international "ease of doing business" rankings!)

Sorry, seems to be a copy/paste error. Thanks, Sim, for correcting it!

Beppi, it doesn't recognise ( ) so you have to use the link feature in the tab bar. I've had this problem before :)
