Depends on the bank. Most of the lower tier cards ie non platinum or infinite are free.

Unfortunately the best offers are on the higher tier cards but that comes with a fee.

What are your financial needs?  That way its easier to recommend something.

After looking at the cards in the market, I personally settled on the HSBC premier Mastercard (rebranded as World Mastercard) and AMEX Platinum.

The latter i.e. AMEX comes with a fee of $550 a year but it is worth it for the high tier hotel/car memberships, the concierge services, the offers on travel / hotels / dining, the amazing travel and purchase protection benefits, lounge access through priority club etc etc.

The premier master card is free if you have a premier account.  It comes with HSBC entertainer offers on many items, lounge access through lounge key, travel insurance benefits, global wifi, discounts on travel etc.

I think for the average person an HSBC card even if advance would be a good deal purely for the entertainer offers on meals, hotels etc.   There are other banks in the market as well and they offer similar benefits and / or different ones like 2 for 1 movie tickets etc.  Do your research and figure out what kind of offers you would be interested in.
