Car Importing (again) but without using

Post new topic

Hi All,
I've read multiple posts about this (some quite old) but can't see an answer to my question.
I have been travelling for a while and I will be in Malta soon for 6 months or so and will have a car. I will unfortunately have owned it for 20 months by time I get there, just short of the 24 months needed for exemption and was quoted nearly 10k on the calc website to import it.
I will be moving on at the end of the 6 months so its massively expensive to import for a short period in malta to then (potentially) reimport in another country in 6m time.  The obvious suggestion is to just stay a tourist but while I won't be working I would like to apply for ordinary residence for the 6m to avoid being a tax nomad elsewhere (which I'm not comfortable with) as it solves other problems for me.
I don't really need my car while in Malta, other than to get into and out of Malta and move stuff so I'd be happy to offroad it somewhere between my move in and move out. It seems that this must be possible but I can't see how.
I've had a few ideas if anyone has any advice/suggestions? :
- I was thinking maybe drive it from italy to my destination to move stuff and drive back to Italy within a few days before I register for residence. I presume there must be some way as a resident I could take a car I own into Malta for a few days at a time without having to register? Similar situation  must happen for (non maltese) car rentals e.g.? I don't know how this would work when I leave Malta though to being in for a few days at the end?
- I thought I read someone saying it could be parked at the ferry terminal before customs in Malta (although I can't find the post). Does anyone know anything about this or long term parking on the Italy side ?
- I do also have a problem with insurance (as will nearly be 180 days since I left uk by time I get to Malta) but I think I can get expat insurance or something for an extended trip. Again any recommendations/advice would be appreciated.
- I saw other suggestions that I could register it in my fathers name who lives in uk but it will have been out of uk for 180 days soon so I don't think that works but again any ideas would help.
Many Thanks
M

As far as I know you, the moment you apply for your eResidence card you are declaring your intention to be resident and therefore have to register your car immediately.

If you could find somewhere to store your car in Sicily, rent a car just to come over with your stuff, take the hire car back a few days later and then do the same when you leave and you don't have to even bring it into the country.

Thanks for reply.
I need to find a place to live so will need to drive it in to begin with.
Presumably If I drove it in but drove it out within the 30 days and stored in Sicily and did what you suggested on way out with a hire car it would work?
Can a resident bring in an Italian hire car ok?
Thanks

Not sure, but most major car hire companies will let you tour abroad but it is really down to the vagaries of Transport Malta.
For unusual car hire situations, try 'Indigo Car Hire' who I believe are based in Leeds, they can organise car hire in almost any country, with and without credit cards.

OK so I managed to find a cpl of insurance companies who will continue to insure my car for > 180 days outside uk and found a car park in Sicily where I can park for 5 months so those problems are solved.

My only issue now is getting the car in and out at start and end.
Info seems to have changed on this and not sure what is right currently (as the most relevant posts on this forum are from 2012) but looks like I need to get a permit on first entry as a tourist for car which covers me for 30 days? I thought I could drive for 6m as a tourist but has this changed? Do I get this at the port ? Would appreciate an up to date link from anyone on this.
In the 30 days though I would drive the car for a cpl of weeks, check out areas and then rent somewhere, move stuff and drive back to park car in sicily then come back on foot and apply for e-residence without the car.
That seems ok, I'm wondering what I can do on bringing the car back in for 3-4 days at the end as a resident ? Do I get 30 days to register the car (at which time I'll be gone and tell them I've left) or will I be blocked from bringing it in or out?
Getting a man with van is an obvious option but much easier if I could just bring car in and pack it myself for a few days.
Thanks again
M
