Is it possible to buy a house on the beach in the Placencia area for $150-$200k?

terrific

define "House". On the beach property is the most expensive so probably not but possibly a cabana type building.

Siestakey15

Yeah, a small 2 or 3 bedroom cabana is more what I am talking about, thanks

no

A "cabana type building"  as  I suggested will not have 2 or 3 bedrooms it would be similar to a small studio apartment  but more tropical.  The high cost would be the lot the cabana would stand on, beach front lots of less than 3000 sq feet can demand $100k.
2 or 3 bedrooms plus bathroom, kitchen and living room is a fair sized house. A typical Belize family house as owned and lived in, by the vast majority of the local population is 400 to 600 square foot under roof, with probably a couple of hundred foot as a verandah and/or storage under a  6ft raised building. Larger houses are for the wealthy locals (politicians and lawyers etc.) and expats.
When the HGTV program about Tiny houses came on the Belize cable channels the locals found it quite funny as Americans needed to cram so much into them, and the thought, 400 feet would be considered a tiny house.
Have you visited Belize yet, it is the only way of getting a true idea of the sorts of buildings available.

Yes, we were down there a couple of weeks ago.
I see a lot of opportunity there. Did see the kind of
Cabanas you are referring to. We would be comfortable
In one of those in the right location. Where do you live?

terrific

I live on the outskirts of Belmopan, two houses built by local builders. For me its a great location central to all the places I want to go within a couple of hours, including the beaches. 5 minutes drive into the center of Belmopan with great shopping and resterants and banks etc. But then i return to  the peace and quiet of my 42 acres in the jungle. Seems more expats are also realizing this as a good location as there is a lot of clearing and building around this area.

I agree it is an area worth considering.

You also must be just a short drive from Spanish Lookout, with the manufacturing (windows, homes, etc) Western Dairies, Farmers market, Etc. Last year we went there to the only industrial trade show (that I know of ) in Belize. I found great bargains on power tools, and sampled lots of good food.

We have stayed twice at a small (three cabins) resort in Teakettle, "Leslie's Private Paradise"  owned by a very interesting retired Belize ambassador. His 20 acres backs up into the hillside jungle, with lots of animals and birds rooming through.

Two questions, what are the land/lot  prices, in the Belmopan area, and can you suggest a few good restaurants? We like Corkers, but have not had time on past trips to explore for others.

We love our little place in Placencia Village, (400 steps to the beach  :D ) but have considered investing in other areas of Belize.

terrific

At the moment there seem mainly to be larger lots on the area for sale along the Belmopan side of the river average 5 to 7k an acre smaller lots below about 10 acres at about 10k an acre. Yes we are located very well for Spanish Lookout about 20 minutes away, but there are 3 big hardware stores in Belmopan itself, which carry lots of US tools so we are well catered for in that area.
Several good grocery stores and a Brodies. The Blue Moon at the roundabout on the lower end of Humming bird is very nice but also Scotchies, west indian near by. Up on the western highway almost opposite the art box is Rancho which is a Belize family owned restaurant bar ( best chicken rice and beans in Belize IMHO) and has a lovely swimming pool. Also our local. In the middle of town there are lots of smaller places,  including the Caladian and several chinese, on forrest drive is a great pizza restaurant Pasqualies. If you like Indian food the Everest is a tiny place opposite the market next to the fire station, in a little food court of small hut restaurants of different nationalities.
Also in town all the banks some decent auto shops and all the government buildings. I always feel Belmopan gets a bad mainly from those who have not actually visited as opposed to pass through for years. I plead guilty to that as we had not considered it when looking for a property 5 or 6 years ago and we remembered an empty town center that was desolate after dark when all the government workers had gone back to their villages that we knew from the nineties. Even in the 5 years we have been here we have seen so much more within Belmopan. From a vacation point of view it is a lot closer to many of the tourist areas than San Ignatio  and only 20 to 30 minutes from the Zoo. Less than 2 hours to the Airport via the western highway and about the same down to the coast along the Lovely Hummingbird road.  End of Belmopan promotion :-)

I agree with your location assessment.
We are a little farther south than you, but 20 min to Belmopan, 30 min to Hopkins, 90 min to the airport, 90 min to Placencia. Not an easy drive to San Ignacio or Bullet Tree, or Spanish Lookout, but also not frequent. Belmopan seems to have most everything you generally need. We love the jungle and the hills and the scenery and the serenity of the area.
We love Scotchie's and Pasquales. A little farther east of Rancho is Cheer's, which we also enjoy fairly often. We eat at the market in Belmopan also.
Prices - depends on many factors. You can still get a decent sized piece of property for a few thousand an acre outside Belmopan.

Have you tried panama, get much more for your money, medical is American standard, cost of living much more affordable and people much nicer.
