Hi all,

Newbie on the Ghana forum? Don't know how to start?

This thread is for you ;)

We invite you to introduce yourself on this topic, to share with us your expat story if you are already living in the country,
or to tell us more on your expat projects in Ghana if you are planning to move there.

It will enable us to help you better but above all to wish you a warm welcome.

Welcome on board!

Hi Julien, and everyone else who reads this!

My name is Maria (Mia). I'm a US citizen, planning a long visit/relocation to Ghana to stay with extended family, then eventually branch off on my own, depending on how everything is going. I will be getting involved in a couple of projects with NGO's as that is my main field of expertise here: nonprofit organizations. I would also like to know what kind of actual professional work an expat can find once there? I'm sure it would be all the wiser to go with a job in hand already, but many employers are weary about hiring foreigners who aren't in the country. Would I have a higher chance of being considered for a position once I'm there in person?
In any case, I'm looking forward to my visit and I can only hope
that it won't be a short one!

Thank you for any input
Mia

Hi
Actually it really depends on the salary and package you are expecting. If you are recruited from overseas then you usually get paid in dollars and get accommodation etc. Locally hired people usually get paid in cedis and don't get any perks. You can get hired once in country but be wary of false promises - mainly the one to get you a work permit which is quite expensive for the employer.
Good luck and hope your stay is a long one

Thank you for the insight!

I think I'll do my homework on American companies that are working there; I know of a couple. It wouldn't hurt to send out some CV's and inquiries for Possible positions that may open up in the near future, or during my time there  :)

Xcellentjoseph

Great!  I'm an expatriate here in Ghana too,  when you're in please do well to write me up. I'm just a year here in Ghana and it would be cool to socialize with you.
For jobs, it's a good one to contact some American companies in the US that have a branch in Ghana, that way it won't cost you much. However, I can assure you that you will get one when you are in. Akwaaba in advance!!!

Hi !
Thanks for your input. I've actually made contact with two American companies with locations in Accra. One of which has invited to visit once I'm there. I am very excited and looking forward to the move.

Good afternoon,

I am Franz from Austria. I am volunteer of the Eurafri.com project and found this site while searching for new contacs in Ghana to setup the base for Eurafri there. I am very interested to discuss business and IT / IoT related stuff with expats living there. I am very business oriented and took over part of the Eurafri project to grow in Ghana. I also posted an job opportunity from the Eurafri project for volunteers living in Ghana.

Looking forward to new contacts and love to hear from you!

Hi 👋🏾. My name is Kofi Owusu aka Kofi Toronto!  As the name suggests I was born and raised in Toronto,Canada. However I’m from a Ghanaian background and have been living in Ghana now for over 10 years. I’m well versed in the system here, going through university and into private enterprise now. I’m a talkative social person, that really enjoys sports. So I’m sure I can be of help to anyone coming to live in Ghana or visit! Look forward to meeting new people and creating rewarding relationships!

Good morning Kofi, coming to Accra in February, can you recommend a very nice but affordable hotel to stay.  Would rather a place not too far away from downtown Accra.  thank you

Hi Mia , it would be difficult to get a job once youre here and it will be better if youre able to secure the job before getting here.

Are you here already?

Sasquatch888

Hi there,

my partner has been offered a job in Accra and we are looking to move out there in a few months. I have started to research and read that some of the nicest places to live would be Airport Residential, Cantonments and Labone - the company will be paying for this so we are fairly flexible. I have also read about the heat, malaria etc. But not read much about other peoples experiences of what Accra is like now, especially from a Caucasian Brit. There doesn't seem to be many good forums specific to the topic, so I am interested to hear any thoughts from people who have lived there in a similar position to ourselves (company paying for most things (don't know specifics yet), no kids (and no plans for one), in our mid 30's from the UK). Anything about places to live, visit, food and drink, entertainment, telecommunications, driving, socialising, other expats and their partners, insect bite prevention and general life in Accra (I have heard mainly positive things) - would be greatly appreciated. I will also be leaving my job in the UK but have been moving towards more internet based business here in the UK, so I won't have a job to begin with but after getting everything organised while my partner gets to grips with a new and challenging position, I will look for opportunities either in Accra or split between there and the UK.

Many thanks

hkann

Take the opportunity, you won't regret it. There is a vibrant expat community catering for all types of interests. You will find the housing expensive but if the company are paying you will live in a house or apartment comparable to or better than the UK.
Yes, it is hot and there are mosquitoes and not everything is available all the time but that said if you are adaptable and willing to experience new things you will enjoy living in Accra.
You can look on accraexpat.com for the types of accommodation and also the expat groups and events. There is a FB group, Ghana International Expats, where you can get advice on most things. As also NAWA is a great group to join to meet other women in a similar situation.
