I am 70YO, retired, financially secure and in US. I've been to Portugal 3 times and have an Algarve visit secheduled Sept 2. I really want to relocate to Portugal. The Algarve visit will decide me between Algarve and Porto.
Even though I've not yet been to Algarve, it will likely be my destination since I grew up on the seacoast and really love being near the ocean. Another big plus is the large UK/US expat community.

I understand all the hurdles save one, and have no problem meeting the other requirements (income, health insurance, FBI check, etc.)

The big puzzle is CAR. I have a responsible US car (2014 US Prius) but the import requirements are evasive. Specifically, there is  a EU Certificate of Compliance. The online information is hazy at best.
Does anyone know of a good resource for understanding this?

Should I be unable to import the vehicle, is it feasible to live in Faro without a vehicle (periodic rentals are fine)? I am comfortable with Portuguese local and national mass transit. Would carless be a problem?

I eagerly anticipate thee move. I love to cook and would love to provide my friends and neighbors US-style festive meals (including US ethnic cuisines like Cajun, Tex-Mex, Soul) on US holidays.

THANKS in advance for any wisdom.

The process of legalising vehicles in EU countries is called metriculation.

My son has done it in France with U.K. spec’d vehicles and a horse trailer that I sourced for him.  I understand the  process is similar in Portugal though a bit more expensive.  Worth doing Though as buying a car locally is MUCH more expensive than in the U.K.

That said, I am looking at relocating my yacht to Vila Real de Santo António on the Rio Guadiana.  My intention is to use public transport from the airport as the railway station is quite close by.

I hope this helps!

I’d enjoy sampling your cuisine!

All the best to you....

Regards

Tony.

P.S.  I’m 74....   and still young!  :)
