To keep your status in Italy, you need to get a permit that allows you to stay for long periods of time in other countries. This permit is called the permesso di soggiorno UE per soggiornanti di lungo periodo.

This permesso is valid for an undetermined period of time.

You will only need to update the basic information on your permesso, such as your photo and address, every 5 years for it to remain valid as an ID document. First, you will need to apply to make an update (“aggiornamento” in Italian) by filling out a document or kit and presenting it to the post office.

However it’s important to know that if you stay outside the EU for more than 12 months, or outside Italy for more than 6 years, the Italian authorities may revoke your permit.
