Hey Super,

There are a few things you'll need to do if you want to collect your pension in Viet Nam.

First, and most obvious, you'll need open a Viet Nam Dong (VND) bank account. This can be done when you have a one year visa.

Second is selecting a good bank. Vietcombank is a pretty good choice because they are good at handling foreign transactions, especially pension payments.

Third, submit your SSA Direct Deposit form to FBU Manila. One important note is that the form doesn't (at least didn't) ask for the CITAD number for the bank branch you have your account. I spent months trying to figure that one out, but once I did I haven't had any problems.

SSA recommends not closing your existing DD account until you start receiving your DD into your VND account at the bank of your choice.

Finally, make sure you have an updated local address in VN so you can receive Form SSA-7162, which is REQUIRED to maintain benefit payments every year.

Good luck and enjoy your stay in VN.

Alternative if you still maintain a bank account in the states: Have social security direct deposit there. Use ATMs in Vietnam to withdraw.
