Expat interest in politics in Portugal

Hello everyone,

As an expat, your day-to-day life in Portugal is impacted by decision-making at the political level in your host country as well as in your country of origin. We would like to know how involved you think expats should be in the political day-to-day of either their host or home country?

Can expats vote during elections which take place in their country of origin? Can you do so online or through embassies/consulates in Portugal?

What is the administrative process which has been set up in Portugal to enable expats to vote in their country of origin?

To which extent should political life in Portugal include expats and their concerns? Should they be more active as a community to make their voices heard?

Are there any precautionary measures to observe during election period in your host country? Any local prohibitions?

Do you keep up with politics in Portugal?

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I think that if you have chosen to become a citizen of another country you should take an interest in that country's politics.  That is not to say that you would not be interested in your birth nation's political scene.  I am unable to vote in my home country as I am no longer on the electoral role there.

Yes, I think it would be good if expats who chose to live in Portugal could express their interest in the way the country is run.

Sadly, if you even mention a comment that could be construed here as "right wing" you will be labelled a facist.  The people here are completely ingrained with socialism and communism so there is little chance that this will change anytime soon.
