Hello Peter,
Welcome to this Portugal forum. I would suggest you to access also to the french spoken forum:
https://www.expat.com/forum/viewforum.php?id=4384
It's a very dynamic forum, many expats you will find there are living in Silver Coast region, in many towns, including Caldas da Rainha and nearby.
I'm sure they will help you in a smooth easygoing integration
Hi Daniel,
Thanks for reaching out. I am interested in Caldas or any other city that is of medium or small size with good aminities that usually expats are looking for. Away from tourists, living among native population, learning the language and enjoying local way of life. Peter
Hello and good day!
I wrote in French to the post that has been written in French by loulou as I think it is polite to do it in the same language. From your suggestion, I gather, people can stay in both English and French language forum using the language accordingly.
Thank you,
Peter
Hello everyone! I just joined today and I am excited to start my planning journey to retire in 12 years to Portugal (or Spain). I am a planner, and doing this now helps me look forward to something new and exciting. I am not sure how much I can help others, since I am just beginning.
Hello,
I'm new to the site. Traveling to Lisbon on Saturday, 9/12 and welcome tips on neighborhoods to explore close to Lisbon and Porto but not in tourist areas where housing is more affordable and a train ride away from the centers of town. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry I can't help, but would you kindly post some pictures when you arrive? Thanks and good luck!
Hi Peter
We live just 10 mins from Caldas. Its a great town with everything you need. As you said, not too small and not too large either.
There are excellent markets in the town, a great hospital (that's what we have experienced anyway) and plenty of things happening (subject to of course COVID).
We are ourselves selling up and looking to move a little further away, but we will hopefully still remain only 30 mins from Caldas itself. Great place!!!!!
Hello! I just joined this site a few days ago and would like to introduce myself. My wife and I just moved to Lisbon from the United States. She works remotely and I'm attending a graduate program.
We might be moving toward Ericeira (or somewhere else that's close to nature but within a short drive of Lisbon) in a couple months. If you live in the area or have any suggestions for us newcomers, feel free to reach out!
Kind regards,
Sander

Hi everyone,
I am Marize from Port Elizabeth South Africa,.
Hopefully one day we will make our move to Portugal. (I am struggling with my gran's citizenship application which seems to be a very long road.)
My great-grandfather was born in Madeira and came to South Africa circa 1929. He passed on in 1960 when my gran was only 14 years old.
I am currently struggling with my gran's citizenship application and might not even succeed to obtain same due a name change.
I have been doing our family genealogy for the past +-10 years and absolutely love all the stories from back then.
I studied Interior Decorating and are currently a 4th year LLB student - also full time employed. My husband is in the Fire business (health & safety).
Any assistance would be appreciated ito the application for citizenship - I have to proof that my great-grandfather changed his name legally which proves to be quite difficult. The Consulate in Johannesburg advised that we need this document to register my gran's birth. If there is some way to boycott this - please advise.
Thanks so much!
Marize
Hello Friends, My name is Thomas. I'm currently living in Chicago. Trying to mentally prepare myself for another winter haha!... But im posting this because I'm really looking to get myself back to Porto or Lisbon at somepoint. So I'd of course appreciate any kind suggestions or feedback regarding some possible English Speaking Opportunities. Id be happy to send my CV to whomever wishes as I've actually lived in Porto from 2016-2018 as a merchandiser. Anyways I can on and on about how much I truly love 🇵🇹, culture, food, etc and I know I'll return soon!
Hope everyone is well! Stay positive friends.
I look forward to hearing back .
All the best.
Regards.
Tom
Hi,
My name is Richard. I and my family (partner and two children aged 11 and 13) are very keen to get out of Brexit-land and relocate to Europe - ideally Portugal or coastal Spain, but we're also considering France and Switzerland.
I am a very experienced procurement director and consultant, currently working in the civil service but most of my career has been in the private sector.
However, with Brexit and now Covid, hunting for appropriate jobs seems to be a nightmare as, although I seem well-qualified for many jobs and being fluent in French, Spanish and German (although not, sadly, Portuguese), I haven't managed to get an interview for any jobs I have put myself forward for. My partner and children are only English speakers but very keen to learn and integrate, although school would obviously be an issue at the start.
I would greatly appreciate any tips, contacts or other support in identifying opportunities - I'm willing to accept a change in career direction but haven't yet been able to find any alternatives.
Thanks
Richard
I tried to go on line as suggested by your post to learn Portuguese but it looks like it is not available in the US . Any suggestion
Thanks

Hi Lesley Anne,
I'm Susan and also living in Alcobaca so would be great to meet up some time.
We could arrange to meet in the square one day for a coffee?
Hi
My name is jean I’m new on here, my partner & i moved to the Algarve in 2018 & have no regrets we love it here, it was difficult in the beginning as we had to completely renovate our casa so going to builders merchants not knowing the language was very hard but along the way we have made some really good friends both English & Portuguese. We live in the eastern Algarve & love it, there is no chance of us ever going back to the U.K. to live This is our home now.
Hi Dan
Both my husband and I are also thinking of retiring to a Portugal from Canada after having a winter home in Florida for 12 years
Your thoughts would be very grateful
What would be some of your advise
My husband and I are thinking of retiring in the Algarve area too. I am fluent in Portuguese but my hubby isn’t
Where in the Algarve would you buy
Hi All,
I regard myself as Ausssie, after living there 20 years, (originally from the UK.)
I am hoping to retire to Portugal before the end of this year, after falling in love with it in 2019.
In Australia, my profession and passion was in Real Estate.
(and who knows maybe tempted to start back up again in Portugal)
I hope to be settling in Lisbon and would be grateful for any advice on everything and anything.
Many Thanks,
Sai
Welcome! I have only been in Lisbon a couple of days, so cannot offer you anything more than a ❤️ welcome to Portugal.
Hay LorieAnnC,
Where did you eventually settle?
I can only decide when I get there.. We plan on renting for a while to get the feel of the place.
Hi,
For now in Portimão until next June, because I’m familiar with the area and there is everything here. I will explore other areas up to Peniche over the winter to get a feel for the rest of Portugal.

Hello, there!
I'm Brazilian-Portuguese, originally from Rio, in my late 20s and moved to Porto five years ago.
Although I've been here for quite a while, I've had a bit of difficulty socializing with the native Portuguese outside their social bubbles, so it'd be nice to meet like-minded people. I'm into nature, outdoors, gardening, films, reading and the animal cause.
I've dealt with many distinct situations here, so if there's anything I can help with as an ex-pat, let me know and I'll try to offer a helping hand.
Hay Patricfor, That’s good to hear and will defiantly keep in mind.
Thank you.
Hi Patricfor,
When I am in Porto later this year I will get in touch!
Lorie
Hello,
Is there an expat community there to connect with? We are considering the Silver Coast (prob Obidos) as one of our options. How do you find the commute to Lisbon and Porto - have you tried by train?
How are the winters?
Thanks for your feedback.

Good day everyone. My name is Bill and i moved to Portugal just three weeks ago.. although it feels much longer. I am presently in Lapa, Lisbon.
I am divorced (many many years ago), with two grown up children - one in UK one in Japan - with their own families.
I still work as *** and have travelled extensively. I have been mostly in Asia (Singapore, Thailand and China) for the last 18 years.
Would be really interested in meeting socially - as we all know, when you land in a foreign country, your network is sparse or non existent - and while I am happy with my own company most of the time, i wold be very happy to make new acquaintances. It will stop me binging on Netflix and talking to the wall. Seriously, I would love to hear other peoples stories and enjoy words over coffee or a glass of wine.
My interests are cycling (ridiculous prospect in Lisbon LOL), sailing (anyone need crew?), and keeping fit by exploring Lisbon on foot.
Kind regards to everyone here ....
Bill

Hello, my Name ist Ronaldo and I am in Portugal since 2002. I live in Alentejo Litoral.
Hi Guys,
Together with my wife and 3-year old boy, we are looking to set up a move to Portugal from South Africa. We are torn between the Lisbon municipality and the Algarve, but suppose that it will largely depend on schooling options (International or at least English schooling). I am currently a business manager working (partly) for myself and also looking into Exports and Imports. We are looking for investments (possibly also property-related) and business opportunities in Portugal where we would like to establish a base and operate from there while keeping ties to South Africa.
Looking forward to exploring opportunities with everyone and sharing information
Ciao for now
Hello Luis
Do you work in the Nazare area
Thank you

Hi all, I am new to the Expat Potugal forum. I have Irish/EU, UK and Australian citizenships. My work background is in the museum and heritage sector: archives- collections- history. I made the move to Portugal with my Portuguese partner, between 2-3 months ago and am currently residing in Lisbon.
I have been attending numerous expat events in Lisbon, since coming here and have made some new friends. Although the Covid situation at the moment, is making it more difficult for face to face interaction with others. I am still going through the process of integration into a new country and still trying to get my NIF number and residence registration but dealing with a lot of red tape and increasing restrictions/changes at present because of Covid.
I am sure there are other expats in Lisbon with similar circumstances to me. I would be keen to meet more people from the expat community and locals here. I think it is important to support each other and especially through these tough and uncertain times. I hope to meet some new people.
Michael
Hi
I have moved to Porto from London during October, I had been to Porto for a long weekend back in January of this year before the Pandemic, and I just had a really good feeling about the city, I have traveled extensively to many cities in Europe and the world, but there was something about Porto I really liked and thought it would be a great city to live
The other reason that really forced my decision was of course Brexit as well. Having lived in London all my life I was looking for a complete contrast to London and Porto is distinctly very different which is why I decided to move here that and the Climate and the people being very kind and friendly I have found so far,
I am a freelance illustrator, which is convenient since it allows me to be able to work remotely.
I have been discovering the city which is quite easy to get around by walking and also I enjoy drawing the architecture as well.
Hi
Just exploring the NHR application having secured Residency before the doors close at the end of the uear due to Brexit.
Is it easy enough to apply for and do I need an address to do so - I currently have a 3 month temporary address.
Any thoughts on the application process welcomed.
Paul
You need to be a resident of Portugal with a NIF that shows your Portuguese address to be considered a resident of Portugal.
Once you get your NIF with a local address you are now considered a resident for tax purposes and then have until March 31 of the following year to apply before the tax authorities for consideration for NHR. It isn’t automatically granted and it’s good for 10 years.
The application is done online.
Hello,
My name is Dale and I am presently residing in Pittsburgh PA with my partner of several years. Moved here in July 2019. Spent the previous 49 years on the Mendocino Coast of Northern California where I moved after High School. Sold the house that my late wife and I bought in 1985 and moved to Pittsburgh after I retired. I am still working here a little to help meet our needs and really want to be able to live a more relaxed retired lifestyle. My partner is younger and still interested in working. We have looked all over at different countries that appeal to us and where we could live on my Social Security as a minimum amount of income. Originally was interested in the Scandinavian countries because I actually like cold snowy winters but they just don't seem affordable for us. Other then the lack of snow, we loved Portugal. The weather seem very similar to the Mendocino Coast. That may be why there are so many people from Portugal living there. I figure we can hop on a train and head north in the winter if we want to. Looking at cities in Portugal, watching videos and reading others accounts we really love Porto. Like that it is walkable, has great public transportation, is beautiful and friendly. We just really seem to being falling in love with the idea of moving there. Our plan at this point is first, to come there for a visit as soon as this pandemic will allow it. If we decide that Porto is for us or we find somewhere we like better (we do want to check out Braga) we would like to make a move early 2022. I am looking forward to sitting in or outside cafes drinking my cortado and not working anymore. My partner would look for a job in the hospitality area and hopefully be able eventually to move into a pastry arts type position. Thanks!
