Help with English engineers stuck in Cape Verde

Post new topic

Hi
My name is Phil Reilly and I live in North East England
I have 2 x engineers who are stuck in Cape Verde for at least another month after having been sent there by my company to do some safety servicing on a visiting ship to your island.
We are unable to obtain a flight to get them home, so I am enquiring if there is a British expat community who they can mingle and socialise with over the next few weeks.
Senior engineer is Eddy Smith and his mobile is ***
Any help would be welcome
Many thanks
Phil Reilly

Hi Phil,

I understand that your engineers are probably suffering from the isolation. What island are they on?

However, you do know that there are now conformed cases of the coronavirus in Boavista (3 cases of which one 62-year old Englishman has died), and Santiago (1 case). In response, the government has locked down Boa Vista and instituted a stay-at-home ORDER which is being enforced by the police and miltary. All non-essential services on that island are closed. Hopefully, they are not on Boa Vista.

In the rest of the islands, including Sal, social distancing is advised. Which means there should be no mingling and socializing over the next few weeks. It is also possible that the social distacing restrictions will be elevated to an ORDER, if there is any further spread, which means they will shut down the bars, restuarants, gyms, and other social gathering points. So their timing is awful.

The various foreign embassies in CV are advising their nationals to shelter in place. The UK does not have an embassy here. But I suspect the British community in CV is well aware of what is going on. You should advise your engineers to not take any chances. It may be best if they did not look to be socializing at this time, unfortunately. Socializing is being frowned upon by the local health authorities (and the locals themselves) as you might imagine. A group of French tourists were reported to the health authorities for not obeying the directions and had a nasty run-in with the police who were sent to enforce the instructions that have been publicly announced. Just saying that the timing of your request is a bit off the mark based on the current situation.

Best wishes and best of luck to Eddie and his colleague. I hope this pandemic is over soon.
