Topline: With coronavirus cases rising to 2,633 in the Philippines with 96 deaths, President Rodrigo Duterte announced that the military will kill quarantine violators on the spot, an approach similar to his punishment for drug users and dealers, as the country’s healthcare system becomes completely overwhelmed.
I think we all know that the Philippines has one of the lowest rates of infection in the world, at just 0.00253 of the population infected.
America on the other had is out of control at 0.074% of it population infected.

Numbers, numbers & more numbers . . . . . .It's just a matter of reporting and having the infrastructure to accurately record it.
How does the Philippines report it, a long waxed string between two empty cans of Spam?
Or maybe a network like the CDC?
What number has something else and thrown into the Corona column? (Italy)
What numbers are fabricated?
I am sure that we all appreciate that the article is from Forbes. It hardly has one line of the full statement and the bit that it does is taken out of full context. Relax pp's.
If you have been following the new's and can speak some Tagalog you will know that this is politic's in the Philippines, if you haven't seen it before you have not been here long enough.
So chill and remember be careful were you get your information from.
As 6 million Filipinos still practice open defecation and 20% of the population lacks access to basic sanitation facilities, making social distancing and COVID-19 cleanliness measures nearly impossible to universalize, according to CNN Philippine
Politics aside...Countries that don't have such dire 'conditions' are already going into total lock-down mode.
So I'd stand with the "President's call" he must be having a lot on his 'plate' including mass Job losses/economic stagnation/FDI dropping so what else can he do?

Believe nothing you read! OR at some point mate, you have to believe in something. The whole world is not out to pull a scam on you, give trust sometimes other wise life will be pretty tough.
We all know that all the figures are not 100%, but they are been reported as quickly and systematically as possible so that each country can help fight the COVID I really don't think that the Philippines is trying to hide anything, what have the got to gain from that, expect more dead, there are dead here from COVID, based on the figures, (have to believe in something mate), higher figures will actually help them get funding from WHO.
How does america report, we know that there are many people there living in horrible conditions, and that there is over half a million homeless and defecating on the streets, (if i was to be like you i would say that this figure is probably a lot high, but i have to believe in something)
Sadly America was just to late to act, ***
England has also stuffed it up, an island country FFS, and they have 0.051% of 66 million people infected, that is 33,000 of there population, and of those infected that number is increasing at 13% a day, with the death rate of COVID of those infected in the UK increasing at 23% per day.
We do have to believe in something, other wise some people would think that the world is flat.
No its not easy!...but tough government measures & supported with citizenry understanding and discipline, will be paramount in fighting this 'sucker' covid 19!
& YES it should "THEN" be about looking at your very own country and sort out the dire need for basic living standards/employment prospects!
Thats after we get through this "ICE AGE" moment!

California & New York, the two most liberal states, by the way with the most taxes, are controlled by their liberal democrat governors & legislators. Eliminate CA & NY, the poor of the USA live better than the middle class in most countries of the world.

Numbers, numbers & more numbers ....
Sometimes numbers are the best way of describing something!...One such example is '69'...not sure what else can be used!

Very true mate, some people don't like them.
My statement was a quote of another member here.
Your'e right Fred, politics aside? Difficult to do given the current turmoil and public emotions.
As for figures? One can only try to trust W.H.O reporting, in saying this it is only as good as the figures presented by all countries. One though does wonder at the figures being thrown out to the World Health Organisation from the original source of this current pandemic and how it got so low so quickly, if it is true then their methods need to be shared to other countries. (or tell the truth?)
Don't shoot me down as it's only an opinion.
Cheers, Steve.
Another number which really hurts is '17' frontline philippine doctors succumb to covid 19!

Draconian shutdown for 8 weeks, too many governors in the USA still have not complied, USA at least 8 weeks away. It is not a secret.
Politics are always a problem.
One side applauds Politician X for doing a great job, but the other side hate him so we have a bunfight and the thread becomes useless.
Like the virus, that shouting match spreads quickly and the whole forum ends up a mess.
In this case, a rather strong minded politician with a track record of extreme action made a threat of more extreme action - a love or hate of him hardly matters to the possibility he'll carry out his threat.
As for politicians from other countries, they're not a lot to do with Mr. Duterte as he seems to do pretty much what he likes anyway.

Keeping a distance of three feet, creates a problem.
a bit ott
Governors don't have to comply with Trump's policy if that's what you're referring to. It's known as Federalism and the US is built on it.
Somebody else gave a percentage of Americans "infected" at 7%. A reliable source, RealClearPolitics has a running spreadsheet and that shows just under 800,000 "confirmed cases" in the US. I recognize the difference between conformed and infected but the latter is another of those fertilizer numbers by experts who have been wrong, wrong, wrong on this virus from the get-go. I don't trust these projections frankly. Nobody really knows what that number is.
Hello everyone,
I am stepping in to give a reminder that posts encouraging political debates or demonstrating your own ideology are not allowed on the forum.
Moreover, I would also request that you stick to talking about the situation in Philippines without bringing in US politics or that of any other country, for that matter as that would be considered going against the forum's rules (off-topic & political).
Thanks in advance for your understanding.
