Any Americans in the UK who have traveled in/out of the EU recently?

Hi all, I'm kind of desperate for some news regarding travel from the UK into Europe for a US Expat who has been in London 6 months already and has a visa about to expire.
Everything I read says that all EU member states are refusing entry to Americans because of the US Covid-19 situation. But the thing is while yes I'm an American, I've been living in China for the last 22 years. Also, I am as I said currently in London where I have been for the entirety of the lockdown.
I need to leave the UK because of my Visa but I cannot return home to China because the border there is closed. So, I would like to go somewhere in Europe, Ireland perhaps for a week or two and then come back to London because this is where my son lives.
Has anyone else traveled in and out of the EU recently on a US Passport? N Any advice or issues?

Thanks anyone for any info or advice you could provide

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

2 points really:

As the law stands today, you (a US citizen) can only stay in the UK for a total of 6 months in a 12 month period.  If you try and re-enter having spent 6 months here, you will be denied entry.

Getting into Europe may be easier for a US citizen than you think; this link will take you to a press report where they have exposed some of the loopholes.

One last point (yes, I know I said 2); the Home Office has been pretty relaxed about people caught in visa traps like this; it may be worthwhile speaking to them and asking for help.

Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for the info and I apologize for the late reply.  Actually thought I had replied already but seems not.
Since your reply I have contacted the Home Office and explained my situation. I’ve requested an extension of stay although as yet 4 days in I’ve not gotten a response. I know they must be busy but I hope to receive a positive response soon.

Hopefully soon I can also get permission to return home and this will all be over.

Thanks again,

Bob
