Hi, there:
I am an American, moved to France in 2018
and have lived with my family in Metz ever since. I had my will executed in Virginia before I decided to move to Europe. Last year I sold my condo in Virginia, so I have no residence to claim in US. However, most of my assets are in US.  Does anyone know, if my estate will be taxed in US or in France?  If this question is too vague, would any of you recommend an estate lawyer who speaks English, so I can get things clarified.  I hope there is a way for my heirs  to avoid paying tax in France. I understand it is pretty high.

Hi,

There will automatically be inheritance costs in countries where you have assets for your heirs.

The most logical would be to sell everything and then repatriate the money.

The easiest way to find a lawyer is to contact your embassy in France. All embassies have a file for lawyers / doctors / notaries / ... speaking your language as well as the local language.

Thanks.
