Hello everyone!
My name is Robert Lambert ..my wife and I are moving to Greece next year god willing ..my situation:

I’m an American citizen living in the U.K. in the last 24 years or so ..my mother is Greek and my father American..so for those who know I’m remnants of the US base in Helinicon ..I lived and went to school in Athens half my life ..

My mother isn’t well so we are definitely coming the issue is the visas ..I know I can stay for 3 months till I need to leave again ,but according to the Greek consulate here I can ask for an extension on my stay due to my mother’s illness ..
Iv been baptised in Athens in 72 ..and my mother has declared me ..so I really don’t see the issue there as my mother will put a lawer to deal with it ..it’s the transition that’s kinda stressing out ..

We have 3 small dogs and we will be looking for an apartment to rent out till my application goes through for me to stay as a resident..(I’m too old to serve in the army ) to get my if id.. I do believe they might make an exemption due to my mom being Greek ..

I will be looking for a part time job in the meantime as I’m a fully qualified sous chef and skilled in this domain for over 22 years..
Plus an apartment (furnished) preferred in the South Districts (Notia Proastia)

What advice can I have on all this ?

Kind regards and I appreciate your input

You should have no problem applying for residency if your mother is Greek and you are registered here. You just need to prove your family status. I moved here from the UK in September last year. I now have my permanent residence for 10 years. My husband is Greek.

If your mother is Greek you have the right to Greek citizenship and passport thus the right to stay here but getting citizenship will take you some time to provide all necessary documents and proof, baptism here is of course a great plus. There is an office in Athens center which deals with these matters, public but you might find it quicker to use an experienced lawyer who deals with this. You might find out about the new visa for Europe which has a three year duration for non EU people such as American and Australian,if you scroll through previous posts I talked about this, perhaps you could apply as an American, worth investigating.Once tourism picks up again you will certainly find a job in your field.Choose the area you want to live and then just tap in property to rent in wherever, rents are not cheap in Athens so be warned.

If you are registered, go to the municipality that you are registered to get your registration paper. You can then get a Greek ID. You will also need to get a tax number and an AMKA number for health insurance. Your lawyer and your local KEP office should be able to help you. I don't know about how it will affect your wife's status. If you were married in the Orthodox church there shouldn't be a problem. If you start looking now, you should be able to find a job easily although it may be out of Athens, in which case, they may pay for your accomodation and travel (if the job is seasonal) Finding an apt. with 3 dogs may be challenging. They must have their travel passports. For apts. you can try the Spitogatos site and plug in Southern suburbs. If you need documents translated to Greek, there is an office in Palaio Faliro called Cristrans translation agency that have been very helpful with very reasonable rates. You can send them your papers online (social media messaging or email) and they will call you to tell you the cost and when it will be ready. Also ask your lawyer about your pension contributions and how you will receive your pension in the future. Don't forget yiur international driver's licence. Hope your mum is better. Also, there are numerous insurance plans for private health care if you want it.
Good luck to you. Welcome to Greece.

You can only have an AMKA number if you are paying into the system or a European person with a pension I believe can have Greek health cover of some sort. You can only register if you are living here for more than three months and if you have the right legally to be here.Greek ID will only happen if he gains Greek citizenship and gaining that will be a very long drawn process, doable?yes but time, effort and money are required.I live in Egaleo and I gained my Registration card from Peristeri police office which has an office for persons applying for these things specifically, they also issued my Residence Card last week, that took time and effort, many phone calls, paper getting and tolerance of lets say helpful but rude staff. As I have said before..head down and bite your tongue when talked to and treated like a three year old and non human, give a thousand thankyous and run.Im sorry to say that jobs will not come easily at the moment or for some time, whats going on out there is..HUNGER...extreme.

His mother registered him and hecwas baptised here, so he is Greek. He has to go to the municipality office that he's registered or to a KEP where they may be able to help him. He needs his birth certificate (translated into Greek if it isn't already) and with that, plus his Greek municipal papers, he can apply for a Greek ID. 😊

Im afraid it says on line that any males up to the age of forty five and gaining Greek citizenship must do National Service for six months. But perhaps if you are the sole carer for a parent this rule may be wavered.

I hope it will be so very very simple for him athkas,as we know Greece is the land of simplicity,is it not?

Much better now than when I had to run around 25 years ago. 😂 I ended up in tears at every step. "Go here, get that paper, go upstairs for a signature, go back downstairs to so and so. Did you bring such and such paper, no? Ahhh, can't help you... "😁

You made me burst out laughing athkas,Im afraid to tell you that some areas of life here in Greece are worse not better;example..the buying and selling of property, even my Symvoliographo said to me recently......OMG....I will never make any contracts with these new requirements of the government,I will never earn any money, too many papers required...its not only that but the owners have some atherator(illegal things they have done)so they have to run around trying to legalise it while you wait only to find it cannot be legalised or part owner lives in the deep tropics and must be found first in the jungle so as to return and sign or even agree haaaaa. We have been trying to buy various properties recently, all had problems,I prefer a yurt on some land now but the laws have changed on caravans and mobile homes, they have to conform to certain standards like energy rating, how ridiculous,I choose to put a caravan in the middle of a four stremma olive grove, who cares about the energy rate on that, just hide, dont tell anybody. And to tell you Athkas that I remember sitting in our car waiting for my husband who was inside a public admin office trying for a simple paper,he had been there between ten different rooms and signatures, when the hour struck for employees to leave they said...thats it,OUT,when he came to the car he was ready to explode, happy days.I asked my Symvoliographo..is it true that most buying and selling can be sorted electronically and on line, her answer is not repeatable on here.
