Moving to Rodrigues ... (at least that is the plan)

Post new topic

Geraldh

Hi All,

I have been looking around on this forum for a couple of weeks. At this moment i'm still living in the Netherlands with my girlfriend. But as soon as possible we are looking forward to go back to Mauritius and to move to Rodrigues.

Yes we would like to live on Rodrigues and see how we can help the local community. First we are planning to go there for 2 or 3 months to make plans and then to return for good. I'm working as a IT manager / professional and for my current contract i'm working 100% remotely ... so why not from Rodrigues :)

Why Rodrigues you may think? I love to kitesurf (i know i have been in le Morne) but the wind tends to be a bit stronger in Rodrigues. We love the simplicity of the island (i hope, because we need to visit it first). I know about the water issues, storms etc ... and it would be great to help out were we can.
At this moment we are looking into to way to start a company in rodrigues or joining one... We are not in a rush but i would be nice to be able to get back to Mauritius this years ...

All advise and tips are more than welcome and i hope to see you all in Mauritius / Rodrigues. Are there people here living at Rodrigues would love to hear your experiences.

Have a great day!

Hi Im Mr Kevin..

Good evening Geraldh
Trust you are well & safe.  One thing that you may have to contend with is the internet connection. Not as fast as you may want it to be.
We were there in March 2016 and had issues connecting with family members overseas.  Hotel was king enough to let us use their marketing office when sending email.
It may well be better now.  Hope someone will advise you on this one.
As for helping the community that would be very welcome - am sure of that.
So working remotely in your line of business may prove to be very challenging.
It would be better to base yourselves in Mauritius and take a 1 week stay in Rodrigues to check it out.
Superb place though.
Hope you make it & happy kitesurfing.
Regards/Stay safe
Rick

Hi,
I live in Rodrigues for almost 3 years now and I can highly recommend it. The infrastructure is amazing and the beaches clean and unpolluted. The internet is more reliable than Mauritius and you have a 10mb Download 7-8 Upload speed at all times. I have worked remotely the last 6 months without issues. Cost of living is slightly higher than Mauritius but once you know your way around it's very affordable. You can access everywhere by scooter or car so no need for 4x4 whatever you are told. Water is a problem at times so renting in or around Port Mathurin is advisable to be guaranteed water at all times. Electricity is perfect and not too expensive.
Good luck with your move and enjoy paradise while it still exists

Ok finally it is going to happen. Next month i will visit mauritius again and visit Rodrigues to see if i will like. If anyone has some tips on car rental please let me know. I will stay there for 2,5 weeks to begin with. What you you see are the places i need to stay? I mean i will book a house nearby mourouk for kitesurfing but i want to get a proper feel of the island would it help to also rent a place in for example port mathurin?

@Sinjonjo

- Hi Sinjonjo - I enjoyed your reply on expat.com to someone asking about living on Rodrigues. I am a Canadian (Steve - 67 yrs.) and have thrilled my imagination by a couple of years of sizing up potential residence countries in which to spend my later years. I thought Mauritius might be 'it', but I now feel that Rodrigues would be a better fit for me. I am at an early stage of investigating how to go about the legalities of that. Now that I have my target, I will get more energetic.

My feel for the Indian Ocean comes from six months I spent in Madagascar back in the 1980's. It was a time of xenophobia there, but I fell in love with the country anyway and always intended to return and live if possible. It didn't happen. Now I am comfortable on an island (Texada) on the west coast of British Columbia, wonderful, but life is short and I feel most alive when living outside my own culture. Aack ... it seems like I am applying for a job. Sorry about that. I imagine you've had plenty of feedback. Keep well. If you wished to make contact, I am here

Now to my investigations...!

@aucklooj2

Hello and welcome !

If you are Mauritian, just go to Rodrigues and find a job, there's no procedure for you to follow as Mauritian.
